Hello all! I recently purchased a 99 Classic with a 12.7 ddec iv and the owner gave me a USB key with Detroit diagnostic software. What do I need to connect laptop to truck? I'm getting a lot of different ideas.

If it is just the diagnostic software you should only be able to pull codes. Not actually change settings.

You need RP1210A Adapter (Nexiq, Noregon, Deaborn, Cummins Inline, ...) and DDDL to read codes and change some parameters. If engine ECM is password protected - call Detroit hotline and they can help you.

to change all parameters you need DDRS. To work with calibrations - DDCT. But these programs are for professional use only.

Have you installed the software yet? Do that first, if you have to register it, then you'll have to pay unless it's cracked software. If it is cracked, don't call Detroit for help with it.

For a connection device, Nexiq is the most popular and works very well. For DDEC IV, look into the OTC EZ-tap. I'm not sure how the pricing is now that OTC bought XscapeEz, but they used to be 1/2 the cost of a Nexiq USB link and work good on DDEC II, III, IV, & V. They did not work well on the DDEC VI because they do not support dual CAN's.

There's many options for connection devices, you need a RP1210A compliant adapter. Shop around, but beware of cheap Chinese copys of the Nexiq USB link. Do not buy one unless it is genuine. The fakes will die the first time you try to update it and have no support.
