I am starting in the classroom with Driver's Solutions/C1 in Indianapolis on Monday. I have been reading a lot of threads where students, once they get with trainers, sometimes have to run into Canada. I do not, currently, nor have I ever, had a passport. Is this something that I should be thinking about getting right now, so I can have it when I do go out with my trainer, in case of runs to the border, or is P.A.M. not going to run students across the border? Any thoughts would be appreicated and thanks in advance.

P.A.M. cant send you into Canada with a trainer or without if you dont have a passport. The boarder patrol would check to see if you had one and would not let you in if you didn't. But, if you plan to get a passport you should go ahead and get the process started now because it can take a while. It took me 4 weeks to get mine but can take up to 8.

Okay. I don't want to keep my trainer from getting a load because of me. I was reading the government's website for passports. Besides making my head hurt, I saw on there where you can get a card now, instead of the book if you are going to Canada. Is that all I need then, because like all noobs I am on a tight budget and the card is significantly cheaper?

Some states offer an "enhanced" drivers license, you might want to check into that. As far as Can. and your trainer, don't worry PAM SHOULD ask you about it long before you get a Canada load.

The card should suffice but it would only be good for Canada and Mexico. I got the book and it cost be $150 but I was going to Brazil/S. America.

Okay. Thanks for the help. I will check out the enhanced liscense. I think I am going to get my passport anyways because when I get out on my own, I want to get as many loads as I can, and if I can get into and out of Canada might help me get a load over someone that doesnt have one. Stay safe out there.

I go to Canada often, never needed a passport to go there. Its coming back to the states that you need it. Ever since 911...

Reentry to your home country is what passports are for. They should call them reentry permits instead so people wouldn't get confused.

I go into Canada on my "green card" and return to the States with same. No Passport, however, I'm a Canadian citizen and U.S. legal resident.

Thanks for the info. I didn't know the correct term. I just didn't want there to be any hangups for my trainer or keep him from getting a nice load because I didn't get my passport.
