You do sound like you are thinking it thru. My advice would also be to plan for the worst and hope for the best. If a shipper says he'll pay you in 30 days, plan for 45-60 days. Over accrue repair expenses just to be safe for the first couple years. If you don't use it, fine but always better to have it. Many a truckers get sunk in their early days from a bad breakdown. You have repair expense and loss of revenue and those who aren't prepared have no where to go.mje and Tonythetruckerdude Thank this.

The man I work for is an O/O. To start, I had to drive the non-CDL vehicle. Like others have said, new drivers CAN be insured, it is just VERY expensive. Just couldn't swing it. Most of the local companies around here want a minimum of 1-2 years OTR. Most companies, although not all, who take drivers out of school are self-insured.
I did interview with two larger companies in my specialty who advertised for 2-3 OTR mandatory. One backed off to a year in *any* tractor trailer, and the other kept the time period but backed off the OTR.mje Thanks this. -
I just graduated Sheridan too.
A friend wanted to hire me but insurance is the roadblock. Progressive will, Canal will and a couple others, but it can cost a little bit. His problem is they wanted everything up front and he has to buy a truck for me so our endeavor got postponed. Going to go pay my dues for a little while til things can happen.
When did you graduate? -
