You will need motor carrier authority and a minimum of $750,000 auto liability insurance. Most shippers and brokers require $1 million liability and $100,000 cargo insurance. Insurance is not cheap, especially starting out. The problem with only running on weekends is that most shippers only work weekdays. Then there is the problem of finding freight that will get you back to your home base. Unless you can find something on both ends, you will find it difficult to make money only running part time on weekends. You can expect to pay in the neighborhood of $6,000-12,000/year for your insurance.

Weekend hauling you're wasting your time after all the cost are taken in to consideration.

 

Let's say your insurance costs you $5000 for the year, can you afford to pay that working 104 days a year, + fuel, maintanence, etc.

No offense, you'll make more getting a part time job on the weekends than doing this.

 

If you're not careful those hours that you log will catch up with you too.....remember 70 in 8....you'll have to watch that re-cap real close.
