Parallel parking

Right now in my training we are marking the landing gear with tape. This is to help us hit our marks. We worked on driver side first part of the week and now were are doing passenger side. The DMV added new skills the last 2 weeks of my schooling so its a cram course. I have 1 week left.

This is how I learned: I would pull past the box (cone) 4 feet. I'd try to be at least 2 away from the cone. I'd crank my wheel all the way to the left. I'd back up until the rear tire of the tandem was about a foot behind the cone and then STOP. I'd crank my wheel all the way to the right and start backing. When my tractor was in line with the trailer I'd STOP. Straighten out the wheel and start to back. When the right rear tandem was 2-3 feet inside the box I'd crank the wheel to the left and just before the trailer was parallel with the box I'd straighten out the tractor. It went in every time. This was for blind side parking. Length of truck and trailer will affect the outcome of my procedure. Hope this helps. The main problem I had was not stopping the truck when I wanted to turn the wheel. I found stopping worked for me because by the time I had turned the wheel where I wanted it I had backed 3-4 feet. I've seen guys do it without stopping but this worked for me. Good luck!

 

I think HotH20 has it well said.. I can do it but i do not think about it now..Too many times parking in Ohio rest areas and delivering to new mall construction sites . It does take practice though. Good luck !

 

go get a toy truck and play with it on the floor. Watch and see how the trailer tracks when you are backing/driving.

Then picture you in the cab doing the same thing on the road.

 

WOW you have to parallel park with these huge things wtf they didnt tell me that when they covered what i had to do in school

 

Depends on the state. NJ all you have to do is Pre-Trip, Air Brakes, Straight Line Back. Alley Dock and Road Test.

 

I have to drivers side every time I go home. Got one dock we blind side every time we go to. AND you have a huge transformer on a concrete block foundation 3 feet off the ground. Guaranteed to take off your mirror or hood if you mess up.

 

I had to do it in Texas for a license. Like one said said get a toy tuck and trailer. The bigger the better I have found and just play with it. you'll start to see whats going on and what you need to do. and remember to BREATH ! I know everyone gets nervous , but you have to control it. You have many more scary things to come at you that are a lot worse than some goofball sitting beside you. one trainer told me the test proctor was more scared than I was !
