The BIGGEST thing is to be in control and aware ! Keep your eyes open to lights and traffic and your truck. remember it takes a LOT further to slow or stop a truck.

if your always in the right gear you don't have to be worried about finding the right gear when you need it, this is exactly why your suppose to stay in gear at all times.
you can skip down if you wish, if your in 10th get down to 1000 rpms shift to 8th when it gets back down to 1000 shift to 6th and so forth, then say your in 8th at 1000 rpms and the light changes to green drop one gear insted of two to put yourself in the power band to go. however i suggest not skipping gears while your learning. take every gear up and every gear down. there are times and situations to take every gear and times you can skip i suggest taking every gear while you learn and think about skip shifting later. -
10 speed transmission? Add the first and last numbers of your speed together, and that's the gear you want. 35? 3+5=8th gear. 25? 2+5=7th gear.
For 5th gear, your rpm will roughly equal your speed X 100. So for 12mph, you'll need 1200rpm for 5th to drop. at 10mph, 5th will drop at 1000rpm. -
Every truck I have ever driven and this happens.. as long as you are moving about 15mph...in a 9 or a 10 .. 5th or 6th gear.. in a 13..6 or 7.. in a 15 or 18... 10 or 11.. I know everyone says watch your road speed.. that is a bunch of pooo... if you are in a bad spot and are fishing.. get it in a pulling gear.. and adjust from there
If you are in a bad situation and can't get it in gear.. trying to match road speed will throw a lot of people in a panic..The best thing to do is to down shift 1 gear at a time until you know what you are doing.. Once you get to be a seasoned vet.... You can skip gears.. double down.. triple down.... but just shift in normal progression until you get comfortable... Good luck.. -
I try to never have to stop at the light, i slow down early, progessivly down #### whre if i have to stop i am all the way down to 2nd. dont always work out that way, and takes some practice and paitence. but it does work out most times for me.b

in nj you will fail a road test not shifting into the lower range pulling up to a light

Now to the Op practice....learn what speeds are what gears for you. learn to know with out thinking how much speed you dropped since your last shift and know what gear range to go to. IE you shift to ninth you slow really fast dropping 20 mph hit 7th or 8th. you just have to get a feel for your truck....also alittle tri axle exp tip...learn to watch the lights if your coming to a red light and you can see the other light watch it to turn yellow...see if anyone is in the turning lane. find your gear you would need to pull ahead but still be ready to stop....
