Yes the raised cast numbers are not what he is looking for and you are correct on what they are for. I was referring to the boss were they are stamped.

Thanks to everyone for your input. Now the problem is that the flat spot under the intake manifold in the center of the block has absoutely no tag or numbers of any kind. If the raised casting numbers dont reference the serial number in any way, the only way to identify the engine is through the ecm. Unfortunately it has been change to an older DDEC3 which shows the engine serial number to be a 1995 block. The previous owner was killed in a trucking accident right after I bought the truck, so I cant find out anything from him. All the valve cover numbers are gone also. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get this engine retagged with the original block numbers? The detroit dealers believe it to be a 95 engine because that is the only number they get when they plug in to the ecm. Is it possible to get them to see that it is the original block and retag the correct serial number. Maybe someone knows someone who works at a detroit dealer who can help me get this done. Help!

That is a critical piece of info. I needed to know if the casting numbers could be used to ID the serial number. Thank you. I want to see a picture because I have no idea what it should look like. I have had diesel mechanics tell me that the numbers simply arent there. I have called detroit and all they want to do is sell me a DPF filter to solve the problem. They have no answer on how to ID the engine. They think because the ecm shows a 95 engine that is what it is.

Go to FL and have them run the serial number of the truck which will give you the serial number, then go back to DD with it and tell them you need an emissions plate for the engine with your paper work and title - problem solved - you have a 2000 model year truck with a 2000 complaint engine.

I had valley detroit in LA do that, so I have a printout from them that shows the correct engine serial number. I did call and give them that serial number and ordered the stickers for the valve cover. They said when they come in a few days I can take the truck to them and they must verify everything and then they will install the stickers. I am worried that if they plug in to the ecm it shows a DDEC3 1995 engine, they will refuse to put the stickers on the engine. They told me that they do not put the metal tags on the engine anymore, only the valve cover stickers. What do you think will happen when I take the truck in to them and they see no ID tag on the engine and no stickers on the valve cover and the wrong serial number in the ecm?

Does it look like some one ground the numbers of the boss and is there hole's drilled in the boss for the rivets of a tag?

There is a hole in the flat spot at the center of the block just below the head gasket. It could have been drilled out, but there is no grinding evidence nothing. On the valve cover you can see where the old stickers were, but no numbers are visible at all.

That is the answer I was hoping for. I actually bought the truck this way, now I know why it was a good deal. The previous owner didn't want to deal with it. Approximatly what should I expect to pay for the dealer to do that.

One thing I just noticed; a sticker like the ones used on valve covers in located just behind the starter on a flat spot on the block, and has a large bar code on it. It also says next to the bar code,( 686905 block. ) What is this?
