If any Husband/wife team drivers care to share their there experience with OTR/long haul, I would really appreciate it.
Husband and I are in our 30ies and considering a career change. We will go where the $ is and don't mind being out on the road for weeks at a time.

as a husband and wife team you can make a killing. however the relationship WILL suffer. just a quick why....he is driving your down sleeping your driving hes down sleeping. depending on what your haul...both might be unloading or both trying to catch some sleep. your together time gets cut to meals and rest stops or layovers.
thegypsylife Thanks this. -
Awesome! Thanks for the response
This was originally my idea, I was going to go it alone and try to get something local so I wouldnt be away from home all the time and then I realised, my heart is really in otr. So i looked more into teaming and now i am very excited about the many possibilitys. My husband and are planning to take our cdl together and then look for a company to work for.
Do you mind if I ask what your favorite thing about being a truck driver is?carrkool Thanks this. -
Well first it something I Know a lot about. I love the freedom you have at work. I am an owner operator, so I don't have someone looking at my every move. Even as a company driver if you want to stop you stop just as long as you get from a to b on time and can make your next move. I don't know you or your hubby nor your habbits. but you don't have some person telling you that you can take a break to smoke or use the bathroom. You see a lot of things out on the road. Some good some bad. but you learn to love most all of it. Me personal I don't truck for the money. I mean yea I need a pay check but I truck because I love it. I think my favorite event in trucking is seeing the kids wave their arms for the good old air horn. to see their faces when I light up the train horns makes me glow....thegypsylife and thecleaninglady Thank this.

haha ya, so cute...I remember doing that when I was a kid too! Awe! My husband and i dont drink, smoke or party were basically hermits lol. I with you on the pay thing, I do want to have a stable income but money isnt everything either, honestly i have racked my brains with what to do career wise and i cant think of anything i would rather do right now. I really crave the independence and seeing the country BONUS! I would like to buy a home or rig (depending on how good this goes haha) and save some money for travel/retirement and afford to send my son to college and/or buy him that new guitar he's always talking about! Thanks so much again

Np a few tips to save money if you get into this. once you get your cdl and get to work see what the company policy is on invertors. if you can put in a 1500 watt invertor and you have the space in the truck put a dorm fridge in the truck. find a hot plate and some pots and pans. this way you can cook on the road. the avg 2 person meal at a truck stop or most place now is 20 bucks plus tip so if out 14 days your look at close to 250 bucks for one hot meal a day me and my wife just eat 3 hots a day for a week for 30 bucks. plus cold drinks at the ready and what ever else you like... this is your biggest expense on the road.

Look into expedite . http://www.successfulexpediters.com/madsen/ . One big plus is expedite carriers will put you in a straight truck at full pay right out of school while OTR carriers expect you to go with a trainer 4 to 6 weeks at low trainee pay .
At expedite you have the right to choose or decline loads . Expected availability is 75% . Many expeditors work 3 or 4 weeks then take a week off . Before the week off they try to get a load close to a beach , national park , ski resort , etc. they'd like to spend a week at .
Parking is much easier to find with a straight truck . Many campgrounds welcome them .j3411, thegypsylife and Hitman Thank this. -
My wife sees too much of me while on the road.
She is getting used to life out here and likes it more now than last year.
-
amazing info! Thanks RickG
I will look into that for sure
time off by a beach or a national park sounds great to me!!! Is that your blog you gave me a link too?
Carrkool, I've looked into inverters and thats deffinatly the route I would like to go, I would much rather make my own food, eat healthy and save money than eat out of greasy spoons. Plus I really like the idea of a "home" cooked meal. I've already started collecting recipes that will easily be able to prep and cook on the truck with minimal clean up.
Do you guys all stay out on the road most of the time or do you go home as well? -
i go home weekends sometimes i stay out for a while depends on me
