Was at a truckstop in Laredo. Noticed a pilot car casing the joint. Name on the side said "Roadrunner". Had interest on the OSOW obviously. Had another driver tell me that they look for loads 12 ft or wider because thee will need an 'approved' pilot car service to run in Laredo city and county roads and that Roadrunner comes to the truckstops and look for these loads in the evenings so the can dime drop. So, if on your travels in south Texas you her of this rumor, please let me know...just want to confirm things.
Rumors.

I heard in California that the troopers and dot were hitting the rest areas and doing inspections
-
California and their Cities are going so broke and in need of money that they might come to your house on your off days and do an inspection on you lol.
-
If the local pilot car companies went through the trouble to get the city to pass ordinances like that, you can bet they feel they need to insure it is enforced. Nothing surprising there.
-
And it can't help out the economy with truckers that won't go there so that they don't get hassled, kind of a snowball effect.

I try to route around Louisiana because of the restrictions that they impose. For instance, I had a load a few months ago that required escorts in part of Arkansas and Tennessee, but not in Texas. Had I gone through Louisiana I would have had to pay for 2 escorts (front and rear). Not only that, but I would also have had to purchase permits for Alabama and Mississippi. The other route I only had to purchase Tennessee, Arkansas and Texas. I had an annual permit for Georgia. By going through Arkansas, I added about 50 miles to the trip, but didn't have to pay for the extra escort. When you do over sized loads you need to make sure that you don't have to buy city permits or have escorts in certain areas. Escorts can get pricey.

Pulled out of the yard with a 11'10 wide, got on Pinto Valle Rd and saw a Roadrunner pilot car. "Great, here we go...get ready to go to war." Got to FM1472 (Mines Rd) and headed south. As soon as I made the turn, I see a CountyMountie. He didn't come after me. Hmmm, Madame me think twice about the dime dropping rumor....
...until someone called me and told me that Roadrunner is somehow affiliated with Warren. Great...more controversy -
New divison of Sentanial pilot care services..

Remember when they had company pilot cars??
That was a flash in the pan idea.. Could of worked if they had done it right. -
Just like the jerk in New Port News ,Va .when you go to liebherr. You go 300 ft off the freeway.. And this guy has a pilot car service.. He will call the cops on you, just so you have to use him he hopes and make sure you have a city permit.
