Paid off my first truck today. About 3 months early. Now, I got friends coming out of every direction offering to sell me their trucks. Either use mine as collateral or sell it as down and make payments. I was like where were you jerks a year ago..lol I am gonna take one of my friends offer tho. Fuel mileage alone is about 2mpg better than mine. I guess I should explain. I was a company driver for small outfit and made some good money. About $1300 week take home. I knew I was gonna buy a truck just didn't know what or when. On my 34reset I was shotgun in my friends truck when we stopped by his yard and I see this clean but older cabover. Talk to the guy he's lease to and he says it needs overhauled. We talk some more next few weeks. He says hell eat the labor I pay the parts I say deal. I put money down just in case. Made me feel better...lol ! Payments $250 week. I saved over $10, 000 for maintenance. Truck is 1988 frieghtliner cabover. 13 speed 425b model cat 4.1 rear. It probably wasn't the smartest choice, but it reminded me of grandpas trucks. He had three cabovers. It just felt right.

Cool buy. Retro trucker! You'll have to upload some pics when you have a chance.

Congratulations on paying off your first truck. There is nothing like the feeling you get paying that last payment. It doesn't matter if it is smart or not, you wanted to buy the truck and you did. Those older B model CAT's are good engines, but they do like fuel. I think you meant 4.11 rears rather than 4.1? Your fuel mileage could be enhanced somewhat by changing that out to about a 354 or something comparable.
-
Oops your right. 4.11
-
HEY FYI HATE TO BUST YOUR BUBBLE but if you have only had the truck a year you REALLY need to keep it otherwise the IRS will charge you back the depresastion that you claim on your taxs. I personal am done selling trucks to get something different. We are buying them and lining them up instead this way we don't get the hook from the IRS

I had a 96 FLD120 with 4.11 and a 9 speed with a 485 detriot that got steady 7 loaded empty gross over weight or light....
-
That is pretty good mileage, especially with those rears. I have a friend who had a Peterbilt cabover with a CAT model B with 411's who got about 4 1/2-5 mpg. He still misses that truck, even with the poor fuel mileage.

It was a freak truck that's for sure. Best dang truck I ever owned....working with the guy I sold it to, to try and buy it back....

congrats on paying off the truck.
Big_Perv93 Thanks this. -
Congrats, I payed mine off last year and bought a new one this year. imo Keep it a year and make some money with it. I agree with the other guy, change the rear end out to a 3.36 or somewhere in that range. I would rather have kept my old truck another year and made money with it, but it needed a lot of work and the truck wasnt worth the 15k it needed. But in youre situation Id run her and bank some cash.
Big_Perv93 Thanks this.
