I work for a mega that will run cheap freight. If I pick up a load that pays less than $1/m it's normally coming from a very low freight area and going into a high paying area. I don't mind breaking even on a load or even losing a little money if I know I'm going to pick up a $2-3/m load after I drop off the cheap freight.

Of course it would be nice to have high paying freight everywhere, it just doesn't happen. My company also bills a fuel surcharge @6mpg x a rate based on natl. avrg. My truck can get 8-9mpg and rarely goes under 7.5, so I don't really pay for fuel. Even with $1200 /wk in fixed costs for a new truck, permits, ins., etc. I still average 1200/wk profit.

Hauling lower paying freight is one thing. Hauling cheap freight is just wrong and lets the brokers win. Many times a load for say 1000 miles will be paying 2.50 r 3 a mile but the broker tries to sell it at 1 a mile and pocket the rest in his companies pocket. I will set instead of hauling cheap freight and if I cant get a good load to roll with I will deadhead to a load or home. Heck I was in cali years ago and it was late in the afternoon when I got unloaded called a broker on a load told him I need to get back to the east coast asap and he told me a lower rate than what was posted. I made my offer and he told me well if he need to get back that bad you will take it...told him well I do need to get back bad but I would run empty and that's what I did. he called me the next morning begging me to take it at my offered price and told him to bad I was long gone.....

Could you define cheap freight? Right now I haul out of So Cal to Wa all in its 2.85,freight coming back to Cali directly if I can find it is paying around 1.50. Sometimes I run out to ID or UT but freight back into So Cal just sucks. So if my rate out is 2.85 and I run back for a 1.50 or even a dollar am I hauling cheap freight? Seems to me Im averaging over 2.00 a mile for the turn, cheap freight is a term that get tossed around alot by people that dont get the big picture. Of course there are not many O/O's that can run for a 1.00 a mile but I bet there are a few.

1.50 is my cut off and that load is just to move out to a better area. I try to keep my avg at 2 or better but anything under 1.50 is not going on my deck. 1.49 I am walking away

I'm not trying to pick a fight with you personally, but what you just said is everything that is wrong with the industry. You just breaking even, or losing a little money on any run is the dumbest thing anyone could do. I'm glad that you are backed by a mega carrier so at least you can have something to fall back with, but as this trend grows and grows those $2-3/m hot spots are going away. For exactly that reason... It's not your fault, it's just the way it goes.
