If your buying the truck from a dealer make them deliver the truck to wherever your going to work on it. That's what his dealer/repair plates are for........

No you can't get plates before a title application is filed..

all you need to get off the lot is insurance.. They will not give you a waiver..

Last 8 I have bought all they needed was me to sign the papers.. Have proof of insurance sent to the dealer and.. drove it home..

If you are buying from a dealer, they may be able to give you a temporary tag to get you home. You cannot buy an apportioned plate without having proof that you have paid your HVUT (2290), proof of insurance, copy of a title or title application, copy of your MC authority, DOT number and paid UCR. I am not sure that you can purchase bobtail without being leased to a carrier. There is temporary insurance that you can buy that will allow you to get the truck home. You can check with OOIDA and they may be able to sell you insurance to get home. If not, they might have a source. As long as you are not loaded, you may be able to drive home without a plate.

When i bought my truck, i received paper tag (referred to as a hunter plate) drove it off the lot from TN. to Fl. picking up my trailer along the way in Ga./ Temporary insurance is also needed to do it legally, any commercial agent could price a policy for you. / usally a 10 day policy as i recall.

Are you going to buy it from a dealer or an individual? When I bought mine off of a dealer last year I had to have insurance for the bank and they gave me a temporary tag. If you buy from an individual I understand that you will get insurance and you can purchase a "one way permit" from the DMV I think. I hope this helps and as I stated this was last year and in the state of Va. Every state has different regulations.

My last new truck they gave me a temporary tag which is nothing but a piece of paper you stick in the windshield. I drove around with it for 3 months before my company finally overnighted me some tags. They kept faxing me new temp tags.
You definitely need insurance which can be as simple as a phone call/fax.

    Don't forget the keys! :)

when i bought my trucks, i got the financing secured, got my insurance, then got all of the title information from my bank, then i went to the Motor Carriers office and paid my 2290, and finally got my plate. I would not advise riding off the lot with just a bill of sale, have your plate before you leave.

Different states, different rules. I bought my last class 8 truck in Az. and was an Az. resident. Bought in Phoenix, lived in Kingman. 200 miles. Dealer gave me a 'temp" good for 10 days I think. Technically, you need to register a vehicle before you drive it on a public highway, IN ANY STATE. In Nv. for instance, you buy a vehicle from the dealer who gives you your paperwork and YOU head for the DMV and pay the registration. Now, in-between the dealer and the DMV office, technically, you're not registered yet. In Ca. you will not get off the lot without paying some sort of vehicle registration fee, even if a temp. The exception is if the vehicle is going to be delivered out of state. I say insurance and cheat on the registration to get from dealer to house.
