It really is fun running with another company driver when you can #### chat back and forth. I'm glad to hear you are doing good. I saw a Mav flatbed waiting for a load here in Laredo, TX today and drove past a few times till I saw the driver. LOL.. He was older with a gray beard... figured it wasn't you
.

So I am sitting at home waiting to go to Nebraska on sun and enjoying a rare 2 days off when the phone rings it is my fleet manager and he needs me to come in right now to take the safety classes I have been bugging him all week about or safety wont let me take this load to Omaha. So being a good do-bee I stop what I am doing and spend the rest of my day at the terminal in safety class.Sometimes these people are a little to demanding.
I took the smith or is it smythe course if you ever get the chance take it because it is really interesting and it will teach you some things you never think about. Then the instructor took me out to my truck to check my mirrors I know this is really obvious and I am only gonna say this because I didn't have mine adjusted right if they have a mirror check station use it and those west coast mirrors shouldn't be adjusted the same as the long mirrors. With your west coast mirrors you should be able to see from the back of the tractor wheels to the end of the trailer I felt like a real doofus but now when I make those turns I can really see what my trailer is doing hopefully this will stop me from being a tarp box crusher.
There was a few people in the class with me so I feel better that I am not the only one destroying tarp boxes I listened to their stories. I am always amazed at how much most drivers like to talk I am not sure why they chose such a solitary profession. So that gives me a little breathing room on my safety points taking them down to 4 but I am still on probation till june. -

Wow, I have spent the evening reading thru this whole thread. Your story and all the other comments are great. I thank u for having taken the time to tell your story. Hope there is more to come.
It seems to me that more is learned when things are not going well than when it is all good. Some of the most discouraging times in life are when we learn the lessons that teach us to endure and to overcome the troubles at hand. And by golly u wake up one morning and the sun is shining, the grass is green, the sky is blue and u realize that just like backing up u really are getting better at the game after all. When u turn that corner thats when the confidence starts to shine thru and u realize that u really have made the right choice to be a trucker.
So keep your head up and hang in there. It is my turn to take that leap into the trucking world and knowing that u survived gives me the hope that I will also. Take Care -
One thing to remember too daytona. You are a brand new driver and it takes awhile to adjust. I think most of us out here have leaned what not to do by doing it at one point or another. Hang in there. It will get easier!

Daytona, maybe your manager is sending you on shorter runs to get your confidence up. Not so much of a chance to have log errors and fatigue would be lower.
I'm glad you got your points shaved a bit. Hang in there.
It'll be a while before I can join you guys though. I am getting my son this summer for good and that is sooooo much more important than driving. Still planning on doing it, just putting it off for a few more years. I'll still be under 50 by the time he is in college, and that is still within my time line.
Will still keep checking you guys out here and waiting patiently for my time to dump this factory lifestyle. -
Thanks for this entire thread Daytrona, I appreciate all the insight... it will help me in the next month or so, when I start school.

After sitting all day monday in Omaha at 445 they gave me a load in St jo Mo to pick up tuesday morning so normaly I would skoot down there on monday night and pick it up first thing but given the fact that it didnt deliver till thursday I took my own sweet time. After a good meal and a good nights sleep I picked this load up in St joesep mo on tuesday. What a nightmare had to back into a dock across a street twice once down a long alley that tested the limits of my skill this is a two drop load.
I dropped part of it in henderson texas at a mine now that was an experience.I had to take it up an incline that was a mudbog for a road and these super singles aint worth a darn in the mud got about halfway and lost all traction. So I backed down tried again with a little more speed after going sideways a little I made it never let off the accelerator just bulled on through.I could here safety in the back of my head why did you go up that hill.
I am at the outskirts of Houston right now at the flying j cant beleive I found a spot.I will drop this in the morning and see what they give me next.I have slowed down a little to eat more regular I have lost a lot of weight (45 pounds)and I am concerned now that this job may be taking a toll I hadn't counted on.I haven't been this thin since I was eighteen. Will post more later -
Greetings daytona45
I discovered your thread just recently and took the time to read it from your first day of school (remember that), and I must admit that it seems as if the first year in general will be the most challenging part of this career move, I am scheduled to start my schooling on the 21st.
I'd like to say that the manner in which you've kept us posted is commendable, (almost like reading a good book) and I respect your no quit attitude, it has given me at least an idea of what to expect and look out for, and that in itself is invaluable.
Stay up, keep using that common sense...and I'm sure you'll have continued success for many years to come.

realistically speaking any otr job , whats mostly available as a new driver, will put you out 10-14 days at a time. I talked to werner last week I have 2 yrs of exp and they still said 17-21 days out for my area. that would be pretty rough. Have you looked into aggragate hauling? might be the only way to go if you dont want to put up with 2 weeks away from home. Unless you get lucky with a local liner. Best of luck and keep us posted.
