So, one of the guys had a scheduled delivery out in Idaho for yesterday morning. Get's there and they refused the load due to mold on the pallets. Not on product, on pallets. First time in this situation and I was driving as well. Ended up getting what they called "fair market rate" from Idaho back to Kansas. "Fair market rate" was 2 dollars a mile. We haul very little freight for 2 dollars a mile and I was reticient to do it yestersay but did it as I was under the gun on a couple of short loads and the weather was getting iffy. How should I have handled it? I did play hardball as best I could without researching where I could potentially drop off the load and let them find another truck. I just didn't have the time I needed. What would you do?

What was the product? How many boards had mold?? Where was the mold located at on the boards, (plain sight or somewhat hidden)), and what percentage of the board was covered??? How many days in transit? I don't know how often you haul that particular load or if it was shipper load... Was it a reefer load?? (sounds like it might be) I would think you'd get the same rate back that you did going up... It all comes down to liability/who screwed up, everyone starts trying to figure out where to assign blame when something bad happens.... If the shipper screwed up, well, that sucks for them but how's that your problem? The bright side is two bucks to return it ain't all that bad.....
-
I'm gonna guess that it went to that little Sysco out there....
-
If the shipper's having it hauled back then they're just gonna restack it on good wood and send back to Boise...

Was a load of food grade salt. Reefer load. No blame on our part as of yet. Had load two thirds off and found a pallet with mold on it. Halted progress. Bunch of phone calls and was what it was. Was held up in Wyoming due to the closed roads. Not sure that should have mattered but could have?

A single pallet with mold mid load, I don't see any way they blame you for that.... If it was something that was caused by the condition of the trailer....
1) more than one pallet would have been infected with mold
and
2) should have been discovered prior to loading, (unclean trailer floor, undue moisture)
Mold is always a moisture related problem...so the climate control/reefer requirement would have been to control humidity, I'm guessing...
What was the set temp?
