Hey there everyone. Another military vet making the transition. I've got 13 years service between the Marine Corps and Army-Guard. Been driving military trucks as an 88M since 2008 including throughout my last two (recent) deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. I'm fortunate enough to have my CDL training covered free through a veteran program and will begin with a school in West Michigan in a few days.
I have yet to decide on a company but so far have received many pre-hire letters from the larger companies. I'm holding out right now to see if my military driving experience may be able to get me into something better before I take that route. I'd like to start dedicated or local out of the gate but will go OTR if I have to. The lifestyle shouldn't bother me much since Im no stranger to some sacrifice. I have no problem "paying my dues" in the industry but hopefully a good company will consider where I've been driving my trucks as dues paid and give me a shot. We'll see what opens up for me...
Anyway I'm glad to be here and look forward to sharing knowledge and experiences with everyone.
Change of scenery....

Good for you. You don't have to go OTR; check Careerbuilder website for regional or local jobs. Get your tanker/hazmat endorsements and TWIC for the best jobs. Plenty of tanker companies hire new drivers. Quality Carriers, Superior-carriers, Prime Inc. (tanker division), Schneider (tanker division) and others. Take a look at Falcon Transport, NTB, Greatwide for more hometime. Best wishes in your new career.
