Why are HAZMAT Crude Haulers working for the same pay (or less) as Water Haulers

Yes you can always move to greener pastures but I am trying to diagnose the problem... why are crude haulers being paid less than someone who does not haul HAZMAT? I could leave my current crude job and have another crude hauling gig in less than 24 hours so the demand for drivers is there. But why is the pay being depressed??

Depends on the company. The rats like Schneider have come in and cut it from around $100K+ a yr to $50-60. There are still some good crude companies out there that take care of their people instead of themselves. Blame it on those who participate in the throat cutting and excuse making for the rat outfits. Save the excuses. Seen it happening since the 80s. There are just too many people who demand too little or have screwed their lives up to the extent that they see no other path but to rat out with CRE, Stevens, Schneider etc. If you are good and keep your nose clean you can find a good paying job.

As a new crude hauler I'm pacing over 80k(commission job). The hard working experienced drivers here are making over 100k while the lazy drivers here are making 50/60k.

In TX I pay for my own housing but I see my wife & kids every night.

Point is. There is money to be made even for rookies just gotta look hard to find them & then work your pay plan

So here is the perfect example below, I did a scan on Craigslist and pulled up a water hauler job and crude hauler job in the same region of the country in OK. Water hauler making $20-$21/hr, plus a per diem, full benefits, vacation, etc.

Then I pulled up a crude hauling job which is more challenging since most don't pay by the hour anymore. Crude hauler makes $20.13 hour and gets a $2K quarterly bonus and doesn't get any benefits.

NOTE: The crude haulers doesn't even get paid for oriention! :biggrin_25523: (but you will need a HAZMAT endorsment). :biggrin_2551:

Well you are leaving out a large part of the pay for the crude hauler... 30% of the line haul.... paid $20.00 per hour while waiting to load or unload...

I work for a company that pays 24.5% of line haul and $20 per hour... in a 10 hour day, I make $320 gross. A lot more than the water haulers make at $21 per hour... Even if they work a full 14 hour day, they make less than I do in 10... I am paid well for hauling hazmat. Why a ten hour shift, there are two people assigned to each truck, day and night shifts, and do to the distance of haul, we can do 2 loads in 10, or 3 loads in 14 if our partner is off.

This is my 3rd week hauling crude I make 350 a day for 3 loads and 400 if i can pull the 4th load. I take my truck home and work any hours I want. Ive only been driving 8 Months. I make more now then when I Hauled sand, I'm home everyday and have Friday and Sat off. Sure a water or sand hauler can make more but they have to run two logs and are out for a week @ a time.
