Tanker and hazmat doesn't necessarily pay more . I can't quote specific rates but a 3 day live load , live unload hazmat trip to Canada pays me $250 less than a 3 day drop and hook to TX and $350 less than a 3 day hazmat drop and hook to VA . Only 1 or 2 other drivers at our terminal have passports.

I just got paid for my first week of tankers. I worked 5 1/2 days hauling fertilizer and I cleared $987. Much more than schneider was paying me!

    Nice,
The company I'm interested in does Fertilizer and other Chems.

1 week left till graduation from CDL School, just passed my Pre-Trip exam yesterday. Had the whole truck and missed 1 thing. What a relief that part is over. Will have "Pad" Exam Monday and Road test Tuesday hopefully. Already have my tanker endorsement and scheduled for my Hazmat Test on Thursday.

    Good times. :)

Good luck on your test. I forgt to mention that I'm home every night too. Find a local gig. If they ask for experience, apply anyways. Out here in Cali there are a lot of "small" operations that hire guys right out of school. You shouldn't have any trouble finding a local gig if that's what you want.

I'm curious about this whole Cryo thing. Is that like driving a Praxair tanker CO2, liquid nitrogen or whatever? Does it really pay more and if so why? More technical?

Local vac trailer here in bay area. pays 28.00 an hour you make 35.00 an hour if you are a pic(person in charge) doing over the water transfer. that is ship to truck. almost like clean harbors work but better

if your driving as a company driver you can expect 65-90k a year..if a contractor driver about half that much..cryo is hauling oxygen, nitrogen, argon, hydrogen and helium co2 is a wonderful gig also..most companies require a min. of 3 years exp. and a perfect record...the money is top notch but the job isnt for everyone..nights, weekends, holidays, slipseat, irratic schedules maybe 7 hours one day then 16 the next...IMHO cryo is the best job in the world but it takes a special breed..Ive been doing it 14 years and would hate to have to do anything else, I have done mainly tanker since I started in 89 and cryo is the best of the best

Cryo is a great job, but like cc tanker said, it isn't for everyone. All of the cryo producers are anal about safety, and policies and procedures are gospel. Most, if not all of them have OBR's, a 65mph speed limit, and a stringent safety policy. The plants run 24/7/365, and you have to get a load when the customer needs it, day or night. You must have a flexible schedule and not require a lot of home time to be successful. It pays extremely well, and the benefits are great.

I went back to the petroleum business after 5 years of cryo because of the home time thing. I wish that the cryo thing was a little more accomodating with that, but it is what it is. I do miss it, though.

Oh, and I hauled for a subcontractor, and our wages were comparable to the company drivers.
