Info & advice : MBE4000

from my experience with mercedes engines, you will definately need some inframe kits. they had alot of problems with the heads and gaskets.. also they put new liners with a "d-ring" in.

fuel mileages seems to be ok.

 

MBE 4000 are OM457 (12L) ore OM460 (12.7) engines. Both EGR and non EGR (Euro-2 ore Euro-3) engines are available. But MBE 4000 got rare in Europe 12V ECM version, anyway nothing unusual, it is good PLD engine.

as a weak point of OM457/460 and OM501/502 is head gasket issue, solved easily becouse MB Engine got one cyl. head per cylinder, and it is DIYer's deal. But I advice to resurface cyl, heads (do not forget to pull out injector first).

run away!!!! company i work for has 7 with under 500k on them in sterling day cabs set at 450.

every one has had at least one headgasket, 4 of them have had new heads and headgaskets twice. plastic fuel lines break, egr goes out, cracked exhaust manifolds, turbos, etc etc mpg is 5.5-6 and they are governed at 70

also we have 3 freightliner columbias with same gearing in day cabs with 2004 series 60's set at 455, much better mpg (6-6.5) and these truck are set at 77 mph

If you are having a good run with the S60's and your mechanics are familiar with them I wouldn't change.

 

the problem of Mercedes Engine that it is European engine and mechanics do some mistakes.

Ok,head gasket issue - they do not resurface heads and new gasket goes bad in 200k. They change gasket one more time and get it bad in 100K!!!

I work for company that owns 200 trucks with Mercedes engines and 300 with D12. I would say engine is not so bullet proof like old good Volvo F12 ore 3406B, but, good engoug and fuel efficient, better Volvo. All fuel lines are hidden in cyl. block, very good winter start with below zero temperatures, some air in fuel tolarance becouse complicated fuel cycling system, good and reliable ECM made by Temic!


It is not all. PLD pump and injector are different parts, may easily be repared and all this stuff is much cheapper pump-injector unit.

Cylinder heads are of head per cylinder design, of 20 kg weight. It is really easy to remove w/o any additional equipment and if you know you get cyl #X problem - you remove only one head, you pay for one new gasket only! MBE4000 is much better for mechanics!

 

depending on year these engines have problems ranging from leaking head gaskets, leaking fuel lines, exhaust brake failure. I am expert certified in these and will tell you they will not last near as long as the series 60. We keep deaireation lines, ctv lines, in stock. Mainly the deairation line is the problem but because of the access to this and the ctv line we always replace them both. ehaust brake rebuild kits and cylinders. alot idler brakets for serpintene belt. Bolts brake a lot. keep checking them and helicoil both holes when dissasembled

 

hey guys i have a 05 mbe 4000 (460) im getting driver complaints of low power and poor fuel milage any thing common with this engine ? its in a freightliner columbia model need help
