Would you haul it for that?

This afternoon I turned down a 13'4" wide, 13'4" tall 25,000lb piece from Jax FL to Jersey City NJ. The rate was $9500. After the escorts and permits it came to about $3.80 a mile for 6 days work including sitting the weekend. That is by far the best load I found in the last 12 days for a 5 or 6 axle.

I've been sitting here at home for 12 days turning down $2 a mile loads for 5 or 6 axles, plus permits - WOW. What a bunch of sports these brokers are. I know that Florida is cheap outbound but ####! I did book 3 or 4 loads for my rates but for some reason all of them fell apart. Might it be that the broker found someone to do it cheaper after committing to me, or maybe they heard that I give poor service? Maybe my MC number is too new - 29905* - nope, can't be that.

99% of brokers and shippers couldn't care less if you haul their load on the back of a mule team and you haven't taken a bath in 2 months as long as you're the one who will do it the cheapest and it gets there in one piece on time. As long as it gets there on time for the lowest price possible that's the guy who will move the load. Since a blue million Johnny Come Lately heavy hauler wannabees bought RGNs over the last 2 or 3 years the rates have steadily declined to the current level that's very comparable to a step deck. But there's 4 or 5 step deck loads for every RGN load.

 

Funny part was she also had a CX210 that was 10'-6" wide and 45,000 for only $2200. Go figure.

 

Wow! And I thought CA was the black hole!

 

Yeah, it's pitiful. ANYTHING that can fit on a step is shipping at $2 or less and most RGN/DD loads aren't any better.

I finally booked a legal 5 axle load from a customer for $3 to TX. Hate to go to TX but it's a customer load - gotta keep 'em happy. I know that according to some I should be getting $5 a mile for 5 axles but that ain't happenin'. Reminds me of a cartoon of women waiting for the perfect man. It's my experience that at least 50% of the time we're riding around for low rates trying to get to or waiting for The Good One to come up. Truckers waiting for the perfect load.

It doesn't seem to make any difference where you are looking for a load. Rates are cheap everywhere. Freight is down and there are too many people who are willing to haul a load for next to nothing. I just had a broker call me back about a load that paid $2/mile. Someone bid about $1.70. My guy could not believe that the cut cut the rate to less than $2/mile. I have no doubt that the broker stuck the difference in his pocket and laughed all the way to the bank. The load was booked through one of their other offices. What an idiot to have cut the rate.

 

How do you guys with 13 axle rigs figure deadheading ? With step or flat I really can't compete on a load with someone who is close by, but I guess if you are getting $8 + per mile, maybe it's not that big of a deal. Do you bid on loads all over the country and just deadhead to them at those rates, or do you generally look for loads close to where your truck is ?

I saw an oversized and overweight load today for 2.00 a mile plus permits out of kearnersville. I also saw one in FL that was oversized but not overweight for 1.41 a mile moving as a partial. I think it is time to sell out!
