Hi, My truck is a 2006 VNL670 with a TRW THP605299 steering gear box which has a leak from the vent hole on the side of the box. The vent hole has a rubber plug. The leak is not really heavy, I don't even add fluid in a month. Also, the steering box makes rattling noise sometimes when you steer heavily in low speeds (backing to a dock etc). What could be wrong with the gear box, how should I approach it.

Change the box you're not going to fix the leak and there is no point to open it just replace it and be done

bubaka-had same problem in my yard dump IH2574. just as you described. nasriza is right your not going to stop it. Lucas oil co steering stop leak worked great. that was my first and only step before I replaced it. put in 12/12 and still not leaking. you can add or empty and use just the product. try before going next step. put cardboard under leak to monitor drips

If it doesn't leak much, I'd try the Lucas stuff first. Keep the steering box clean, as well as the surrounding area to avoid it looking out of place. Good luck.

Yeah, the PS filter is often overlooked and can also cause the chattering, be a good place to start if you haven't replaced it recently.

Sorry for late reply. I will use Lucas for now and then eventually replace it. I haven't thought about filter to be honest, will replace that with the fluid too. I will post how it went. Thanks, your guys rock!

I just got a ticket for the steering gearbox leaking on the Volvo I drive. It was a very small leak, too. Maybe a quart every six weeks. Complete bs.
