I'm buying a Detroit 14L S60 series (470/490) on my new (used, but new to me) truck.

What RPM will give me the absolute best MPG. ie, what RPM does the engine cruse best at?

I'm trying to figgure out if the rear end is correct to allow me to cruse the speed i want at the best mpg rpm. I know on a cat engine they do their best at 1200. Is it the same for a Detroit s 60? I kinda thought the Detroit didn't mind the higher RPM as much.
    Thanks,
    Cody

Every truck or set-up is a little different but I would aim for 1400rpm for a cruise speed.

Well yea, the rear end is different, tire size, trans etc. But basically, what will the engine do best at so I can set up the rest to make the engine the most efficient it can be. (also adjust my cruise speed)

I know the non-egr engines are 1450-1500 rpm. I have a bsfc chart at home I will post when i can.

That answer depends on three things: Rear ratio, transmission, and tire size. Could you post those please.

the awnser DOES NOT REQUIRE REAR GEAR RATIO. the peak power for the 14l and 12.7l is 1450 min to 1600 try for 1500....1400 is to low and lugs the motor to much and reduces mpg

    Richter and D389 Thank this.

The peak rpm for mpg is what Carrkool said. Its going to be at 1400-1600 rpm, you want your cruising speed to be in that rpm range. You can have 2.64 or 4.56 gears but if your cruising speed isn't in that range you wont get the mileage.

I regularly run mine at around 1400 for normal cruising. When light, even down to 1350. When working serious pulls, it likes it best at around 1500 - 1600 or the EGT's start getting up there. When in doubt, always start first at what the guys who make it recommend. Then go from there and find where your engine does it's best.

X 2 The best results generally come from 1400 cruise and in hard pulls trying not to drag down past 1450. With many 10 speeds it is not easy fall in to the range.
