Seriously though...how long do you have to ride someone in order to get pulled and ticketed over it? You must have really been acting up to draw that kind of attention over following too closely. Come to think of it, I've never heard of anyone actually being ticket over it.

You argued with the officer didn't you?

I'm glad that you do agree, but as you well know and stated so its a stupid thing to do.....I don't believe in taking the sugar-coated approach when it comes to driving a truck...I'll try and put it delicately sometimes , but never in a subtle , way...I try not offend anyone , but in some cases and this was one of those it can't be stressed hard enough, just how dangerous that tail-gating is.

you stated my point very well though, I'm just hoping that all of the rookies and students that read all of this take heed to it...

They won't. Tailgating is indicative of a certain type of personality. Aggressive, reckless and impatient. That's why it's such a problem.

The sugar coating...I was being facetious :)

Yes I did get speeding tickets...just like anybody else...but I never got one for reckless driving , or tail-gating , or was never involved in a single accident...just wanted to make sure all the facts were out here..so you see I'm really Mr Perfect just have a PERFECT accident free record..

Violations are communicated from one state computer system to another via numerical codes. Because the traffic laws vary somewhat among the states some confusion (and mistakes) can result. As an example California has a "reckless driving" violation which is a misdemeanor and carries more points than driving infractions. California does not however have an "unsafe driving" statute like N.J. or a "careless driving" statute as exists in some other states. You can see the problem that is created if a violation like N.J.'s "unsafe driving" (a no point violation) is interpreted by the receiving state as "reckless driving".

The first link below is to an article that relates the case of an Arizona driver who found himself in exactly this situation. The second link provides some explanation of New Jersey's "unsafe driving" law. The explanation is provided by a New Jersey law firm (not one with which I am familiar - I just found the article and thought it may be of help to you).

Wow talk about being way off topic.Your question was unsafe driving considered the same as reckless and the answer is NO if you notice on tbe point scale 5 points is more than likely less than the 8-10 points that are assed for the reckless. What I had to do was go to the dmv website print out their version of the points list, listing how many points for what infractions then bring it to the attention of the recruiter when applying for a job fax it to them if you have to.But in their mind unless they can see the proof in their hands they dont bother taking the time to research it this way your beating them to the punch.those that complain about tailgaters dont realize it's about what's I n front of you not behind you.

What seems funny to me and maybe just a little dangerous too is the fact that some of you folks seem to think that those really bad habits like tail-gating and careless driving should get a pass. You need to realize that all of us have family members that use the roads just like you and they deserve the same respect and professionalism that you need to put forth every second that you are behind the wheel. StayBusyTrucker your analogy is way off...maybe legal and all but when applied in the real world ...way , way off...... unsafe driving and reckless driving ARE the same thing in the real world..maybe not in a court room when you're guilty off either of them and trying to keep your driving privileges , but when you're being tail-gated by a semi or a kid thats in a hurry its REAL evident of how dangerous and stupid those acts are. Put your wife and kids in the example, would you want them to be pushed down the road by a stupid kid much less a real stupid truck driver......I don't think you would want that to happen....And yeah whats behind you , and to the side of you , and to the front of you , and above and below you , all are equal on the scale when it comes to safety.......PERIOD......

If you consider I got my drivers license in 1977.. I've never had any points.. does that make me a god or something?

NJ's unsafe driving is the charge for the 'no points' option where you buy your way out. NJ also has Careless Driving [2 points] and reckless [5 points].

You can use the unsafe option twice and not for every sort of infraction. My insurance broker knows the story [he is in NJ] but we have a hard time w/ the insurance company & their adjusters being from Cali.

We get by with the Unsafe Option showing but self insured [largest] carriers will see it differently.
