They indeed are running a scam. Here's how it works. They take new drivers, pre hired straight out of driving schools. They put them with a trainer and effect create a team driver situation. The trainer makes the money for the miles plus extra for being a trainer. The trainee makes a modest set amount per week while training. The team gets all the long runs. The company makes a lot of money because the truck is on the road 24/7. When the trainee has the required number of driving miles, they put him in an older truck with problems and give them all the short or crappy loads. In affect, they don't make any money. My son avearged $1.00 per hour after I checked his logs and miles driven. Oh....and there's more. They left my boy stranded on the side of the road for 2 days before they sent a repair person to help him, because his trailer was empty. There's more.......while he was being trained, the trainer pulled over, put my boy in a cheap hotel, took the truck and went home for a week. He just left him there!! The deal is this......Werner knows that everybody will quit when they put them on there own because of the way they treat there drivers, soooo they just treat them like crap from the beginning. Every person in my sons driving class that went to work for Werner has quit. One left the truck on the side of the road and started walking home. They expect you to quit, so they squeeze as much out of you as possible while they can. They know there bread and butter is team driving and they know they have an endless supply of fresh new drivers out of driving school. It makes you wonder if Mr. Werner ( the old man) knows what his children are doing with his company. It used to be one of the praised companies to work for. What a shame. Werner deserves to be among the wall of shame when it comes to taking care of there people.

They need to get the upgraded trainees to quit to make room for the new crop of trainees. They get tax incentives for training. As far as the leaving your son in a hotel room for a week. LOL be happy he wasn't left in the truck. Sometimes you have to sit in this industry, if he cant hack that he shouldn't be a trucker, plus he was getting paid while he sat so whats the big deal there?

When I was in CDL school, the school's owner came in and had a talk with the class. He claimed "Werner is the BEST trucking company to work for." He was so adamant about pushing this company that he told everyone in the class "If you've not filled out an application for Werner yet, you need to do so TONIGHT. If I don't have your application in my hands by tomorrow morning you won't be going out on the truck to get your BTW (behind the wheel) hours."

I filled out an app and got an invite to orientation less than a week later, after the school had FAX'd it to Werner. I just ignored them and went with another company. I had read all of the horror stories here on TTR and am thankful for THAT. Plus his SELLING was so pushy my BS detector was going off loud and clear in my head.

I'm sure the school's owner was getting kickbacks from Werner for pushing them on students. I'm sure this happens all the time, and not just with Werner. But considering all I've read about this company here, the fact that ANYONE pushes this company as being "the BEST" is laughable.

I agree that the training can be a little better, they need trainers that are patient and help out more instead of going to sleep while you sleep at night, but about the short runs with a crappy truck, give it time. In a few months, show your dispatchers and fleet managers that you are doing a good job and deserve better loads and better equipment. Think about it this way, you wouldn't let a three year old stay at home by himself would you? He has to grow to that responsibility. After a couple months, talk to your fleet manager and ask him for better loads and maybe a better truck, ask and you shall receive. I did. I was in a crappy International and then got into a good Kenworth. Working at Werner may not be the best, but you have to take it as it is, no company is perfect, I have had my times where I wanted to leave and I complained here alot about it, but I am getting it. Just stick with it and do your best.

Well...I didnt tell you everything. The trainer was also disrespectful and abusive. After a week, my boy told him he was going to pull him out of the truck and kick the snot out of him if he didnt stop. He stopped. Sitting for a load is one thing. Sitting for a week while your trainer takes a vacation is another thing. Our boy could have been home with us during that time. He was supposed to be training. This did not occur while he was sitting in a motel room. The whole idea was to get done, get a truck and start making real money. If only he had know what was to follow after the trainer finally got back and they continued.

Im confused on a couple of things. Would you clarify them please. Why didn't your son call his trainee manager and ask for a different trainer instead of sitting in a hotel for a week. Yes they give old equipment to new hires. He was expecting a new truck? I am curious on sitting on the side of the road broke down for 2 days. Never thought to call the safety department I take. You show that you have 27 years in the trucking industry yet you are surprised by the things that happened to your son. Your son can sit around and let things happen or get involved and make things happen.:biggrin_25524:

They have been doing that for more than a dozen years. I trained some with Werner. It's nothing new. "Come on". I got off their truck in Cincinnati. They can have it. Just go somewhere else. Chaulk it up to experience.
