Hi, guys
I finally got an interview with con-way after applying for months. I wanted to know if any of you guys can give any advice on their student program. How much do they start out at? I would be working out of the gary, IN terminal. any of you guys out there ever work there? how is it? i've always wanted to be a driver but i must admit im nervous about driving such a big truck. I've never driven manual so i guess thats my main concern. Ive been working at a warehouse for years and driving forklifts is something i am really confortable with. I love the idea of working half of my shift on the dock and then school/driving. does anyone know what the hours are for a newbie. any advice would be really helpful. THANKS AHEAD OF TIME

That's a good thing, not a bad thing. Because driving a big rig isn't anything like driving a stick, which for some reason often fumbles newbies trying to learn how to drive a big rig.

thanks , that def. makes me feel better. lol

anyone else??

is this con-way freight? sounds like it
-
yeap, thats conway. anyone else got any advice/ ???

Search Conway freight and you might find a better place to post. There are a few of us truckload drivers on here, but I'm not sure how many of the freight.

Getstepn...what are the distinctions/differences in Con Way Trucking vs Con Way Freight? Thx

Driving the truck shouldn't be a problem! May take a bit to get used too but you'll get the hang of it. Personally I would be more concerned about the over the road aspect of it. Just make sure that is the path you are wanting to take.

Truckload is an OTR (Over the Road) job. Meaning, you will travel all 48 staying out a minimum of two weeks at a time. You are allowed to highlight (send a message requesting hometime) after being out on the goad for seven days. After highlighting, the company has 8 days to get you home including the day of your highlight. Typically it does not take 8 days, but it could. Highlighting can be kind of stressful in that depending on your proximity to home you could get there quick in in turn negatively affect your miles for the week. This is a whole other topic that opinions vary greatly on. There are regional options available that can provide more consistent hometime. However miles can be in short supply at times and crazy at other times. There are some regional drivers here on the forum that can better answer regional specific questions. Either way you go with the truckload side will result in very little physical labor. Your job is essentially driving. Conway Freight is a local job that has several offerings. You would be home daily and your pay would be based on a combination of dock work and driving. You will do more physical labor as you will be often unloading your own trailer at customers. Like over the road, your pay can vary depending on you miles/hrs.
quetzalcoatl Thanks this.
