Hey Guys, so Ive narrowed my choices down to two options; Con-Way Transport or Knight Transportation. Both companies have a hub in the Charlotte area and have similar packages concerning detention, stop, and breakdown .etc. I do like the fact that Knight Transportation has multiple divisions (dry van and reefer) but Con-Way gives you an extra 0.05 when you head up to the Northeast area. The one thing that I am really having trouble figuring out with pay is better. As you might know, Knights rates are 0.33 (500+ miles), 0.35 (500 300 miles), 0.39 (300 200 miles) and 0.42 (200-50 miles). I take this to mean that if you have a trip that is 598 miles you will receive the 0.33 rate and if your next trip is 285 miles, you will receive the 0.39 rate. Do I understand this correctly? Con-Way on the other hand starts you off at 0.30 after training, when you reach 60k miles they bump you up to .32 cents. When you reach 90K miles, you get upgraded up to .34 cents; after 120k they give you another raise to .37 cents. Both companies grant you a 0.01 raise annually. Guys, I cant figure out which is better; the pay bracket from Knight right off the back after training or to be up to 0.37 with Con-Way after a year? Your opinion is greatly appreciated.
Need your .02 (Con-Way / Knight)

What about Schneider?

you've explained knights pay scale correctly.. but knight is also no forced dispatch (unless they changed it since last may). don't forget that knight has an empty and loaded pay scale, if conway is the same for loaded and empty i'd go with them instead.

So here's my assessment of Schneider:
Good company (from what I hear) with divisions upon divisions to work for (except for reefer), it would be a great benefit to work for different lines and learn which outfit really floats your boat without having to leave the company (start your hard-worker reputation all over) and disrupt your paycheck. Schneider has a hub also in Charlotte, NC. Tuition reimbursement is 150.00 / month. Coming out of school Schneider starts you out with 0.28 cents. After 6 months, you are raised to 0.32 cents. After another 6 months, they give you another .02 cents raise so that you are up to 0.34 cents after a year. You also receive 0.01 raise annually. They run to Canada and Mexico (I am unsure if you receive extra pay for running out of the country). The trucks are governed at 60 mph. One thing that I definitely like is that you trip plan yourself. The average weekly miles (according to recruiter is 2500) for Knight, Con-Way and Schneider. -
Exactly lol. I was just wondering why you didn't include them with knight and conway

thats pretty cool that knight isnt forced dispatch. i dont think i would ever work there but that is a rare thing it seems for company drivers to be nonforced dispatched

Hahah, I gotcha. Yeah, I called most of the transport companies from Prime - C.R. England.amiller Thanks this.

You could work for knight your first year then transfer to con-way to take advantage of their better 2nd year pay. But if it were me, I'd go con-way right off the bat -- be taught during training while running solo miles rather than being a team (I'm not sure knight does this, but most training companies do).
However, I would strongly recommend a FAST card (passport will work), hazmat, & tanker endorsements to give yourself access to the best (longest/most profitable) loads at con-way. For instance, conway has good freight going from the Charlotte to Montreal...
disclaimer: I am a conway truckload driver, and have no firsthand knowledge of knighttpeep and Civilservant Thank this. -
Double Yellow ~
I appreciate the advice and will add tanker to my list. -
Knight pays the same for loaded and empty miles.
