are there any states that allow? or do you need authority for all states or whatever.

i picked up and delivered 2 loads in one state. due to the fact that NOTHING leaving the state wants to pay. and am looking at a load in another state. but i totally forgot about intrastate hauling. so i guess i'll have to bag that other load.

If you're a member, call OOIDA and ask them to be sure. There are about 4 states that have no intrastate authority requirements - if your UCR is paid up you're good to go. If memory serves, that includes FL, AZ, and two other I can't remember off the top of my head. Out of the remaining 44 conus, about half make it easy to apply for and get. The other half add requirements, mainly in the areas of business registration with their Secretary of State. They will require a separate insurance filing as well, along with whatever annual fees may come due.

You can always Google the motor carrier division in whatever state you're wondering about and see if they have some guidance.

Minnesota does not have "intrastate" authority per se. If all you do is haul exempt material, you only need a DOT number. If you only haul in state, you can get a "Y" plate for your vehicle. It's NOT apportioned like a regular plate is.

Funny you asked, some of my drivers have recently been stopped in Cali, (some other areas, but mostly Cali.) and the only thing the officer was interested in was to see if the load originated and delivered in the same state.

Most be some out there running inTRAstate loads with inTERstate authority that have been popped recently.

There are actually about 11 or so states which have intrastate authority. California and Texas are two of the larger states which require intrastate authority. I have never been asked whether I have intrastate authority or not. My home state of Tennessee does require intrastate authority, but it has never come up. I rarely do intrastate in any state, so it is usually not an issue for me. Intrastate authority is not very expensive except for California and Texas. I think that California charges about $150 and Texas is $200. Most of the others are less than $100. Unless you regularly haul in a state that requires intrastate authority, I would not worry about it. As someone else mentioned, you can call OOIDA and speak with them. They are very knowledgeable about that sort of thing. You may also call your state IRP office and ask them.

FYI:Texas has been cracking down hard on those hauling within TX borders without TX DOT authority--BUT--if a load originates in TX--and is bound for a BORDER TOWN cross dock--ie:load in Dallas del to Laredo--for transfer to mexico--TX DOT does NOT consider this INTRASTATE--as long as the FINAL destination is MEX it is ok--but for some reason I was told this DOES NOT work in reverse?
    Just a heads up..........

I haul strictly in NC. You do not need a dot# or a NC DOT#. You just have to have your minimum insurance requirements, an a for hire plate. You will be ready to roll!

well, wyoming port said they don't care. and knew nothing about ucr and intrastate.

i do have a letter from colorado that states. " grant authority to above named carrier to transport property between all points in the state of colorado.

and some letter that says :insurance cab card certificate for texas: which does state ucr registered.

get a few letters for a few states that i've never had before. and some DO say intrastate.

but judging from the colorado letter. i'm guessing i'm good to go for pickup and delivery inside colorado.

Idaho doesn't require intrastate authority either.

i'm guessing it's mostly the less populated states that probably don't care. being as how loads are so far apart.
