Of all the bad habits people have following too close is the one that bugs me the most.
It's amazing how many people practice willful ignorance on the road.

This goes back to the DMV and their lack of required knowledge. DOT should have a 30 minute video explaining the different types of vehicles that share the road and make it required to watch before issuing a license. If people had a better understanding of the different vehicles and how they operate people might think twice about tailgating, speeding, cutting off/in, pulling out in front of and on and on. They pound it in the kids heads not to drink and drive by towing around jacked up cars, why not one from a semi accident?pattyj Thanks this. -
It doesn't seem to be that the opposite side of the table believes the older drivers are too harsh, it's the fact that they use their age, and years driving almost as a crutch..
Just because you've lived "x" amount of years doesn't mean you've really lived, or experienced anything. Congratulation on making it to that number though, many don't.
Just because you've driven a truck for "x" amount of years doesn't automatically mean you have more experience then the next guy. I'd say a guy that hauls in the oil fields for the past five years would have more experience then someone who's been on a dedicated route from Texas to Oklahoma for ten years.
I'm not trying to say that the older drivers don't know anything, but i just find it strange that they AUTOMATICALLY believe they know more then the next guy only because of what a small status bar tells them on the left side of the screen.
That's what blows me away on this forum.
So much for the safe and unsafe driving and what not, it's all opinionated, one side is backed by a book and the law (which doesn't really enforce the book most of the time), and the other side is back'd by everyday experiences.
While one driver wont get behind a car to encourage it to mosey on down the road another one will. One driver is following the book, and abiding by the law, the other isn't. But at the same time one driver is either sitting in a gaggle of cars traveling at "X"mph or possibly holding up traffic. While the other just help open up a lane so that traffic can continue to flow. There's dangers in both, a driver just has to make sure he/she mitigates and weights the risks properly. -
I ain't read the the whole...just up to this post. But Tony makes a great point. Except it's not funny that some think tailgating etc...should get a pass...it's downright freakin' scarey.
But you see it every day out on the road. Drivers just set right on the butt of a four wheeler or another big truck. I just don't understand the logic there. For one, if something happens to the fourwheeler...blow a tire, deer runs out in front etc... the big truck is just going to run right over them. I don't care how good a driver thinks he is, he ain't stopping in time. And more than likely he's texting, messing around with something in his truck, eating etc... so his reaction time is going to be even more slow. But it doesn't matter. Drivers just set right there on the bumper of a car like it's a normal practice.
Or they set right behind another big truck. The hood ornament could spit on the back of the trailer. Not only is the reaction time garbage if he has the big truck in front has to stop, but your vision of the road ahead is nil. You can't see around the trailer in front of you the majority of the time. You have no idea what's going on ahead yet you still run on their rear end like you are apart of the trailer.
I don't know about anyone else, but I sure as heck don't trust someone else to be my eyes out on the road. I want to see what's ahead of me so I can react to any situation and a driver sure as heck loses that ability when all they see are trailer doors.
These habits of tail gating and driving a big truck like it's a little four wheeler ain't going to change, I'm afraid. These CDL mills are putting out driver after driver yet they ain't really drivers. Sure, they might be able to start the truck, put the tranny in drive and mostly get from point A to point B...most of the time....but they ain't truck drivers. Not IMO...there's more to being a truck driver than just pointing the rig in a direction and hope you get there. -
Nothing I can do? I have a phone. I can call one of two people. Either your safety manager or the state police. Who I call depends on how reckless you're driving. I'll let you explain to them why you think this behavior is acceptable.pattyj Thanks this.

You're absolutely right. I had a roughneck tell me one time that he'd been a roughneck for 7 years, trying to use that as why he knew what he was talking about. Of course if you've been a roughneck for more than a couple of years you're either an idiot or lazy or both. anyone that shows any intelligence or any work ethic won't be a roughneck for very long before being promoted. There are lots of idiots out there of every age thats why you have to base opinions on common sense. It just so happened in this case the older driver made sense and the student didn't. It had nothing to do with age or experience, the old guy was just right.
