I think the megas have a lot to do with low rates. The reason is that they have other ways to generate revenue. For example; truck leases. Nothing like leasing your old equipment to new drivers and still controlling how much they can pay towrds the truck lease. Then bust them out with extremely low miles until they cant afford the lease and bail out. Then the mega gets the truck back to do it all over again.

When you can generate revenue on trucks that have already been depreciated down to zero you can afford to also drive rates down to eliminate competition on the freight side of the equation. This is not the only reason rates come down but its for sure one of them.

Edit: Sorry this was supposed to have a quote with it but it didnt come through.

Guess u havent seen the new US Xpress corporate building. Do u think that building was built cheap? Have u seen their execs salaries? Have u seen their sales reps commisions? How many terminals they have and how much it costs to maintain them? The list goes on and on. Brokers and many others only want u to believe that. Execs in this industry believe in the saying "there's a sucker born every minute". Look at brokerage firms profits. They on the otherhand dont have the same as the megas to pay for. They only have offices and employees. Really...Look up THEIR profits. You might see a difference. Remember, C H Robinson USED to be a trucking company. Where do they stand now? Think about it...

The big cariers have so many finacial and tax advantages over the little guy you cant compare. They can creat core companies who lease the equipment to the carrier on paper. They can use tax credits, wage programs, educatonal programs etc to get a cheap workforce. By the time the accountants get done shuffling numbers and working the inner structure of the "corporation" and its "sub holdings". They can show losses, show profits, balance loans and interest on investiments and make it all into a nice big fat payday..!!
All the little guy has is fuel mileage, wear and tear, road expense, freight lanes of choice, fuel and maintainence price, sacrifice of home time and the small tax credits we get for being away from home to use for our variables. Mash that up against the ever growing DOT enforcement nailing us at every turn for $100 here and there over BS, more and more truckstops charging you to park. More and more expensive equipment required to do the jobs like computers, APU units etc. Lack of fuel, oil, tire, discounts that the big carriers get. We have very little to work with to make a buck so its easy to force the rates too low for us to compete which is EXACTLY what the big companies and the DOT want. They want large loads moved by rail, delivered locally by daycab or short haul drivers who will require little or no parking for their breaks and will be paid an hourly wage and E-logged so they are easy to manage. They want us all to be $9 an hour delivery drivers who punch a virtual clock (e-log) do their day and go home.. The "specialty" deliveries will be done by large carriers who are easy to monitor, well insured and have the equipment to always get it done.

This is why we need a simple tax code. I don't even see the need for per diem nor write offs for depreciation or any other expenses for doing business. Our expenses belong to us, not our government.

That's the rub, most O/O's don't run themselves as a business.

I do not think people are desperate, i think its more from the under covers who are helping the big companies by providing them all the bio data about the caller. How the heck do the brokers know that my brother lives in MS. Just called on a load posted by Landstar from from OH to Staunton VA. The phone answerer says the rate is $700 for the run. The DAT reports approx $1150 on a regular day. Now the the name of the person and extension did not even match. Any way long story short what can you do if the behind the seen mafia gangs on you guys one at a time, you will be forced to pick up cheap freight. Last week I ran empty out of Jackson MS (best market for loads 5.5 loads to 1 truck) but some how all the loads I called for were answered but reposted again and again. I brought a load for Landstar for $1200 on a 1000mile here to make some money on the way to Northeast. Way back to Hackensack NJ Landstar, TQL and Freight Quote all offered the load for $1300 for 1000 mile run. Because I had to be in a school meeting I ran empty to SC and picked up a cheap and heavy load fro CH Rob. Did not make any money after staying out for week and a half. So here are my two cents, nothing is going to protect you from the brokers and the under world ganging up on you one at time, unless all truckers stick together without any racism.
