Another town bans truck parking...

Guess Mene... you are one of those 4wheelers that txt while your driving, cut a semi off to get the exit at the last min, takes for granted where and how the food was delivered to the local grocer, how your gas guzzling SUV got to the dealer you bought it from, where you got your desk and other things computer, stapler, printer paper from the store.
We truckers brought them to that store.
Yes i do agree that some drivers are ignorant and irresponsible for their actions, but that doesnt give you the right to go spoutin on about the rest of us that are real Professional drivers that take pride in our work and give ever courtesy we can to be a reasonable service to this great nation even with all it troubles and idiots that make our job difficult enough.

 

The town of Ozark Missouri was considering a ban on truck parking on a certain street behind a walgreens. the street has no businesses, houses or anything along it. It goes behind walgreens and goodwill, with a farm field on the other side. It is wide enough to accomodate parking and still have two travel lanes.

The motion was tabled after a truck driver spoke at the meeting. I visited with my Mayor and gave him a much better idea: Issue parking permits for those that live in Ozark and make it a safe place for them to park their trucks for that occasional 10hr break or 2 day hometime when they have to take the trailer home. I told him that rather than banning trucks and discouraging drivers from living in the town, control the issue of parking and make sure that there are designated places for truckers to park, including overflow. He told me that there was a factory that might allow truckers to park in their oversized and unused parking lot as well as a defunct stadium that has a large parking lot.

One of the problems with parking trailers on the street is denting the asphalt, especially in the summer. I suggested requiring dunnage such as plywood to be used for those permit holders to use. When you approach a problem with an open mind and ask for input, sometimes you can come up with a much better solution. Now the truckers might get a secure parking area while on hometime (funds from the parking permit will add the parking area to the police patrol route) and the town will welcome truckers. (I hope.)

 

Whatever happened to "Jason's Law" wasn't it included in MAP-21 (or whatever that bill was congress tossed together)

I've been noticing a lot more trucks sitting in odd spots lately (in the Northeast, where you really can't plan for traffic snaffus and there's very limited truck parking) Are these just a fraction of the GPS e-logged trucks that are starting to come online?

What happens when you can't get out of a small town fast enough and your truck goes into a HAL-controlled 10 hour shutdown?

"Sorry officer, your 'local' ordinance says I gotta go, but the FEDS shut down my truck. Can you find a tow truck big enough for me? By the way, I'm not going to pay that bill, so the rig can sit in impound until the shipper/consignee decides he wants the freight that badly. So can your little hamlet afford an $850 tow bill up front?"

 

It is so easy for them to pass truck laws as they do not drive trucks.

By the way, ever notice the biggest houses on the quietest streets need the biggest HHG rigs to move them?

Nobody ever builds a McMansion convienently ajacent to a truck stop.
