I am a recent student grad and have applied to Maverick. I have looked at other companies and keep going back to Maverick as they are my number one choice to work for. I have applied for their TCD. I am taking the CDL test on May 16th. Plus I have also been recently diagnosed with Diabetes type 2 and have to work out some of the kinks there before I get pre-approved to go to Mavericks orientation. Already on medication for the Diabetes, which isn't severe so I'm not on insulin. So far prior to medication have been able to keep it pretty well regulated with diet. I am also gluten intolerant so my diet is rather limited. I am looking forward to working for Maverick once I get everything worked out.

just get it all worked out before you go and when your doctor gives you the ok make sure you have a release or approval from him so you don't get turned down at the DOT physical which will be the first thing they do along with a DOT drug test.

Thanks Suncoast, I am actually working with their HR right now to get all of that worked out so the whole process of me being approved and going through their orientation goes as smooth as possible. So far I have really been impressed with how Maverick has been handling things. Very professional since I have been involved in the hiring process.

Maverick is a good outfit. I wish I could still do the physical part of flatbeds because I would be driving for them or TMC. I got sick three years ago with a pancreatic tumor (non-cancerous thank god). They had to treat it as if it was cancer though, and had an operation called a "whipple procedure". They rearrange everything in your guts after taking a lot of it out ( 90% of the stomach, gall bladder, duodenum, bile ducts, some of the small intestine, and then put what's left of the small intestine back to what's left of the stomach). The pancreas does two big things (and a lot of little things as well). It makes digestive juices and regulates insulin. When you have this kind of operation, it's a crap shoot on whether or not you're goin to have to take insulin or not. Early on, I was taking shots, but then I graduated to pills (metformin). After a little while, the doctor put me on a cinnamon supplement as well. Eventually, I got off the metformin and only take the cinnamon supplement. My blood sugar runs between 80 and 90 all the time now.
The point I'm making is that I'm a firm believer in cinnamon supplements, because it worked for me and my extreme conditions. I'm healthy as a horse these days. Now I need to add that I eat a lot different because I can't digest a lot of things. I can't have processed sugars (high fructose corn syrup), rice, noodles, anything fried, anything with a lot of butter or oil, dark green veggies, and the big one: beef. You can get rid of that type two diabetes by watching what you eat, but try the cinnamon supplement as well. You can get it at Wal mart in the vitamin aisle. It might mean the difference between your med card or not getting one.
Good luck to you. -
Thanks for the information Jakaby. I tried the cinnamon supplements and they didn't do much for me. I can't do anything that contains wheat, rye, barley or malt. So any type of pasta or bread is out of the question. I try to stay away from gluten free bread unless I make it myself. Most of the gluten free items are high in sugar and I stay away from anything really high in sugar. I do eat brown rice on occasion. What I have found that really helps my glucose levels are chia seeds. I have had great success in regulating my glucose levels that way. I don't expect to be on medication for very long as I continue to lose weight. They sell them in the organic section of my local grocery and you can also get them at an organic/health food store. I have been watching what I eat since I have been diagnosed with gluten intolerance back in January it was causing me too many health issues that have since reversed. Wasn't until I took the DOT test for school that I found out I also have diabetes. Overall since my diet change I have lost just over 35 lbs. As far as Maverick goes I'm not doing flat bed, I'm going into the Temperature Control Div.

Hi Michael, I hope everything works out for you with Maverick, they're a great company.
If you have any TCD specific questions, feel free to ask me, I'm happy to answer anything I can.
And welcome!storm2004 Thanks this. -
Good to hear you are making progress towards getting the diabetes under control. When I was going through all of that I really or enlightend about the problems diabetes are causing. It's an honest I goodness epidemic. Sorry the cinnamon doesn't work for you. I was the exact opposite: cinnamon worked for me and chia seeds didn't really help. I guess we're all different.
I guess I saw maverick and automatically assumed flatbed because I'm parked between two maverick flatbeds as we speak. LOL. Still, good luck with them. -
Jakaby, Thanks! Yes we are all different and need to find out by trial and error what works for each of us individually. What works for one person doesn't always work for another and vice verse. I basically chose Maverick from all the positive things I have heard about them. From what I have read they are a straight forward and honest company. As long as that is true I will get along great working with them. I am sure once I get the approval and make it through their training process I will enjoy a long employment run with them. I also just don't quit a company. I am there for the long run. I have been with the postal service for the last 10 years, but things aren't looking great and my job is being phased out so I had to shift my focus on another job. I have looked into trucking before. My dad was a truck driver and I have been on the road with him. So it is a lifestyle I am familiar with.
Jakaby Thanks this. -
Thanks Captian! I am hoping it works out too. So far I have been working with a recruiter and HR for the past few weeks. I have been very impressed with them giving me the information I need to get approved and the professionalism. They have been straight forward with what I need to do to comply to their rules. Like I have stated I like a company that is honest and straight forward. They also seem to be very organized which is something else I will like.
Jakaby Thanks this. -
You certainly have the right attitude for this business. I'm sorry to hear about the postal job. I had an uncle that was a postman for a long time. In Hawaii no less. Went straight into it after retiring from the navy. The post office is going to have to figure out how to compete with email and FedEx at the same time.
Again, you have a good attitude about this. That goes a long way. It's first and foremost a job, And with a job comes reasonable expectations that you will be willing to do what you were hired to do. I worked around farming and logging my whole life. I got sick, and my employability changed. They couldn't tell me if I would ever be able to work again, but I got a lot better than what they told me I would. I got into OTR because I had always been driving day cabs, be it pulling farm equipment, logs and heavy equipment, beer, and other. The lifestyle was easy for me because I'm divorced with no kids or commitments. It will be tough at times, but a good attitude will help you progress.
Youre going to hear a lot of good and bad about every one of the companies out there. Some are better and worse than others. But again, it's a job. I work with 3 rules-1.dont lie to me. Always tell me the truth
2. Do what you tell me you're going to do. This includes paying me what you say you're going to pay me.
3. Don't expect or ask me to do anything illegal.
If you keep those 3 things in mind, you can work for ANYONE. Be it Maverick, or even CR England for that matter. Good luck to you and keep us updated on your progressNRGNXS Thanks this.
