Landstar rates suck right now!!!!.....point blank period!!!!!.....used to make descent money here but now the rates for a Van is a joke, and they have a gazillion short loads 100-150miles that have a good rates $2.50-3.50per mile but with those skimpy miles its a joke..........dont know how much longer i'll be here if this continues, i like landstar in general but these rates a pathetic!!!!

Yes they are..Do you think this is just Landstar.?..It's the economy.
This may help you.Look at it this way..Right now the ''shippers'' are kicking our ###.They are very smart knowadays. They no the ''economy'' is in the tank so they no that there is 1,000,000 trucks and 100 loads..So therefore they will get the ''cheapest rates''..
When and if the ''economy'' turns, the shippers will pay the big money..At that point the ''loads'' will be 1,000,000 and there will only be 100 trucks. This is when it's our turn..Do you see how it works.?

Hang in there and ''hope'' the economy gets better. That is when it's ''our turn''..In essence, right now the ''shippers'' own us..But this will hopefully change when the economy gets better.I have gone through this alot in the 25 years of trucking..Right now it is in the shippers corner to call the shots.Again, all we can do is hope the economy gets better and picks up.Then the ball is back in our corner..

Have you thought about taking a look at your business plan and possibly making some changes so you could gain more profit from the current rates? Just out of curiosity If you had the power to set the rates what would they be?

I have to disagree with your observations on both the economy (as it relates to the transportation industry) and the O/O's current position in the industry. For innovative business owners on both sides there is a ton of money to be made out there. The problem is to many people are waiting for the money to come to them instead of rethinking thier game and developing a business model that takes advantage of the opportunities available.

There are recession proof segments of the industry that are doing very well and there are some changes coming up that are going to make it posible for some to make alot of money. Of course taking advantage of these opportunities its going to require changes that alot of people just are not willing to make. Then again I know guys that bank 100k + every year and still find something to whine about.

It does I agree but if you look at traits shared by the most successful among us the ability to make changes is probably at the top of the list.

Sorry for you. We haul a SD and $3.50 is *very* nice. We bought a trailer with $1000 a day, loads.

We haul OD and we're demanding more. The more you ask, the more we get. I love $1200 - $1800 for 500 mile legal loads. If they can put it on our truck for $3.50 a mile, without permits, we'll take it. No tarp is even better!

How would you like to tarp a 48' x 12' x 10' load, get permits, wait 4 hours to load and get paid $3.50 a mile, on 45,000 lbs? How about $50 to tarp?

The grass is not always greener...

each one of us has his own standards. I need 1000 $/day gross. this if I want to stay on the safe side. If I really want to be what I call profitable...
