Panama Canal

Florida ports are expanding, to handle the increase.

 

They expect an increase in shipping via Texas ports but it's really tough to say. Supposedly it's going to reduce freight coming across the country from California also. The question I have is if company X built a DC in Cali to break bulk the containers from Asia are they just going to abandon it and move to Texas or Florida or wherever? Time will tell I guess.

 

Ya but it's hard to know as an outsider what a shipper might see as cost effective. I've hauled Coke product half way across the country and turned around and hauled a different flavor back almost from where I came from. I'm sure it's going to make sense to send stuff via ship through the canal to eastern ports rather than off load and train or truck it across the country unless there is some time issue.

 

FL and TX are very employer friendly and have very low taxes. They'll move in a heartbeat. Plus you have Savannah and Charleston wanting a piece. California WILL be the loser out of a wider PC. Screw Cali and let them self destruct.

 

Savannah is supposed to be a big winner in this as well

I'm a n00b, so I'm guessing this would have a negative impact on trucking jobs in California and a positive for the SE (I'm brilliant). But overall what would the impact be on the truck driving job market and is this a big enough deal to have a noticeable effect?
