While I do NOT believe in all of this government BS "protecting us from ourselves," I do have to believe in the seat belt law.

Someone mentioned something about comparing seat belt laws to motorcycle helmet laws. They really are not the same thing. While I strongly believe a person should wear a helmet while riding, if you don't the only one you are likey to physically hurt is yourself.

OTOH, if you are running down the highway and not wearing your seat belt, you do run the risk of being "tossed" around inside your cab if you hit something, (a big, really big pothole,) or happen to drift off the roadway. If you are wearing your seat belt you are much more likely to remain behind the wheel, where you can regain control and avoid hitting something valuable. Such as ME!:biggrin_2559:

I believe it was back in the late sixties or early seventies that some rocket scientist in Sacramento proposed legislation for seat belts on motorcycles. No, I'm not BS'ing on this. Our current crop of incompetent law makers are not the only incompetent ones in history!

In Alberta its the law. Mostly I do wear my seatbelt, but there are some REALLY bumpy roads I travel on, and I end up getting cinched down towards the floor with every bump... usually I wont wear my belt on those stretches.:biggrin_1square3:

Seat belt's,helmet's,are nothing more then a violation of the citizens civil right's. I see it like this I bought the car, truck, cmv, motorcycle, not the dumba** law makers. I pay the insurance, and licencing fee's,why should they tell me what I HAVE to use in it or on it? thats like them telling you other drivers that you can only drive a 1979 freightliner, not the truck you choose. See what i mean? after all it should be my (our) choice.

If you won't wear it because you don't like the rules, wear it for the ones who love you so if you are ever in a bad accident (no matter who caused it), your chances of coming out of it alive or more intact than otherwise are higher.

Seat belt laws are not for "protecting" us.

If you get ejected in a wreck - my tax dollars have to clean your butt off the road. I'd rather not have to pay money out of my pocket for your choices BUT that's the world we live in!

Funds generated from tickets are to help offset costs of those who choose to be selfish and not consider how their actions affect those around them.

You don't "have" to wear a seat belt. Nobody is going strap you in! The government isn't going to open the door for you and start your truck either. That's not what it's for.

Consider the law and the revenue generated a form of public insurance to clean you off the highway so I can get to my next stop!

I asked a cop about wearing a seat belt. He says. "It's the law." So I asked him what if the lawmakers passed a law that said a person must stand on their head for 3 minutes everyday, would you comply? He said no because it would be a stupid law. That makes him and anyone who thinks like him a hypocrite. If he obeys a law because "it's the law", then that should apply to ANY law. I refuse to wear a a seat belt because the state (government) has no right to tell me how to live my life and wearing a seat belt does not make me a betlter driver. I will reluctantly pay a ticket I got in Illinois only because they have threatened to suspend my driving privileges in Illinois if I do not. Mind you, this is for an offense that does not put points on my license; sort of like a parking ticket.

I used to think like both of you... I do not know it if this is the way it works in all states... I can only speak for California. I've lived in this
state for about 7 years. In the past 4 years, I've received four separate seat belt citations.

    1) I have found through this history, that this is an easy ticket for motorcycle cops... they can just zoom past in between lanes looking
in the cars they pass, since they're right next to you, you're nailed before you can even react. All four of these citations were written by
    motorcycle cops.

    2) Three of them occured on weekends... when it's kind of slow on their shift, this seems to be one of their primary focuses. Not all states
have this, but many have the stipulation that a seat belt violation is considered a primary violation... that is, you can be pulled over
for that alone. Such is the case in Cali...

    3) While it is not a "points" violation, I have found out because of the number I have had, that it is a violation that they will increase the
fine each time. First may only be about $30... but the second will be about $75, third will be about $125, and the fourth can be as much
as $225. So while it will put no points on your license, they will force it to become financially undesireable to not change your driving habits.

I feel as put upon as you both... but now I wear the seatbelt all the time... just costs too much now, for me not to. :biggrin_2556:
