@Jbatmick....what is a fair rate? @Lostkeys.....running AR, TX, OK, MO, LA, KS, MO, GA, NE, IA, TN....I have about 28 states but run these states often.

What rate do you need in order to be profitable?
-
You need to factor many things into quoting a rate. Do you know what your cost to operate is ? Your salary requirements ? How busy will you be kept ? What is the prevailing rate in your neck of the woods ? How good is the shipper about paying, loading trucks, etc. ?Insurance requirements ? Any possible back-haul opportunities ?Accessorial charges ?
If you are bidding on freight, that says to me the shipper is asking for the lowest price, and there will always be somebody willing to haul it cheaper.
I never quote a job just to have work. Make it profitable but fair, do the folks a good job, and hopefully everybody will be happy. -

That is it in a nut shell...jbatmick said: ↑If you furnish a truck and trailer, get paid 1.32 to 1.45 a mile, and that includes fuel surcharge, you will not last very long in the trucking business:smt022.Click to expand...

..2.00 Minimum -

Unless you are a heavy hauler that's terrible fuel mileage.Bigray said: ↑Not a chance..He will be one ''break down'' from bankruptcy...As it sits now it is 80-85 cents a mile for fuel..
1.32-.80 = .52....Now add in tolls,breakdowns,maint,etc etc...
Minimum these days with a truck and a 53 Dry Van is 2.00 a mile..Click to expand...
As far as what you need to make, first you need to know your cost of operation. I would bet that most owner/operators out here have no idea what their truck costs per mile to run.Click to expand... -

I would include IL, IN, WI, and OH in the mix for dry van freight.txownerop said: ↑@Jbatmick....what is a fair rate? @Lostkeys.....running AR, TX, OK, MO, LA, KS, MO, GA, NE, IA, TN....I have about 28 states but run these states often.Click to expand...
