but yeah I am. :yes2557: The old man got out of being active duty (Navy & Army vet) and after a couple months he left this week to go knock out the IITR's course up in Creswell, Ore. A whole new ballgame for me as I'm used to everything pretty much laid out for us and now well I'll just sit down, hold on and enjoy this ride. As much as we don't want him to have to do OTR since we've got way too many heathens running around; we both know he's going to have to pay his dues. Like anything in life start at the bottom and move on up. Look forward to chattin ya'lls up as I tend to talk way too much or so he complains:biggrin_25523:

There are no dues to pay; that's just a myth. There are many top quality companies that will hire new drivers. The school your husband is attending may have some of them recruiting from the school. The best money will usually be in tanker or flatbed and then followed by refrigerated. One website to look at is trans-system which is the umbrella company for 3 trucking companies that hire new drivers. These 3 companies have an excellent reputation for being good employers. Tell your husband to ignore the "experience required" on the trucking companies websites and job applications and apply anyway. Many companies hire new drivers and don't advertise it. If these companies need drivers and your husband's applications is looking at them, he has a job. He cannot put in too many applications; the more the better. Also look at Careerbuilder website for more trucking companies in your area. You can help him by starting a list of websites for him to research.

Thanks Chinatown! I figured I'd be playing a big role in the job hunt for him. I'll let him know to not always be discouraged by the "experience required". Ya never know maybe someone will decide to take a chance before the time frames.

Why did he choose driving as a career ? What was his military MOS ? His veterans status would give him priority in applying for federal , state , county , or city jobs which may not require much experience if he has a CDL .
His military years could count towards retirement on a federal job . Check this site . https://www.usajobs.gov/

When he was in the Navy he was an MA and in the Army 13B. He is close to finishing his BA in CJ but his heart isn't in it and I can't blame him one bit for taking a break from it. Can't expect him to do anything his hearts not in. As for driving, it's just been something he's been interested in since I met him 10 yrs ago. His step dad drives local and that has just really encouraged him more to follow the path. I agree on the federal jobs, I didn't even think of that since we've moved back to the Oregon Coast and don't really have any bases nearby besides Lewis. I'll pick his brain on that too.

Yes, not much out here for Master-at-Arms either. Lots of good trucking jobs in Oregon & Washington.

Thanks for the help. I'll start looking in to more of these companies. Don't seem to find too many folks on here in the Oregon area. We live on the coast so it's even harder to find a company that'll hire me.

There's probably several companies near you, that aren't nationally known. The best pay will be with tanker/hazmat. System Transport pays good; a flatbed company out of Washington that has a heavy presence on the I-5 corridor. TWT Refrigerated Services also does a lot of I-5.

As a last resort, if you want more hometime, try the food service companies. They deliver to fast food joints, grocery stores, etc. The pay is usually very good but hard on the back if you do it for years. Greatwide is one of those companies with divisions all over the USA. Check with the grocery stores, fast food, restauants, etc and ask which trucking companies deliver to them. Good money hauling fuel to gas stations/truck stops, but to me that would be boring, just depends on what it takes for job satisfaction.

I've never read anything negative about the trans-system companies; usually very good reviews.

One good company to check is "Clean Harbors." It's a hazmat company pulling vans & tankers. Research their website for any terminals in your area.
