I could have got a non cat pump for $900 or a cat reman for what I paid. I am in Canada though and parts are more expensive here. $800 is a good price. What kind of warranty comes with it? When done by cat the warranty is north America wide at any cat dealer and covers parts and labor which is why I paid the bit extra for the cat reman. The after market pump had a part only warranty , I thought it worth paying the bit extra to have the labor covered as well in case of a warranty claim given the labor on that job is the main cost.

Are you saying 4-8 hours to change just the harness under the valve covers or something more thaN that?.

licensed to kill it would have been about $1000 if the harness was the only thing it needed...but...oh no..i needed a water pump too. kw9 mine has a year warranty on it.

My wifes truck just threw a 93 code today. It threw a 96 code earlier and I changed out the VVA oil pressure sensor and the problem cleared up. Now, only about 20 miles later, up pops 93 so I'm thinking perhaps harness although this engine still has the old style actuators. It's '06 MXS with about 280,000 miles, 8500 hours on it. I looked at the harness earlier and, while I wasn't looking at it from a "i have to change this" point of view, I don't recall anything that should take very long so just wondering.

If it took 16 hrs to change a waterpump on a Acert in a W9, the word mechanic is being used loosely. I changed mine in 5hrs in my driveway. Drain the water, split the turbo, and just keep working forward. The bracket on the front takes like 30 min to loosen. It doesn't have to come out. total cost $485

licensed...the only thing u may have to think about is that the risers may have to come out to run the new harness. it depends on how the wiring was routed when they built the motor.

This is a good thread to keep going as I think it's good for us owners to discuss these labor and parts costs. As these engines get more complicated we need to know what it takes in terms of time and parts to fix them. When we talk about our experiences it gives us knowledge when we have work done and we can have an idea if we are getting bent over or not by the shop.

About 4 hours for just the harness's, maybe a little more or less depending on any problems we run into. That judged from the last one I did. I started first thing at 8:00 and parked the truck and went to lunch at noon. That included a 15 min break and cleaning up my tools before lunch. We had one that we couldn't fit the valve cover base past the fuel lines, then couln't get the fuel lines loose without pulling a bunch of brackets out of the way, then 2 bolts in the base were stripped with bigger bolts jammed in that we heli-coiled to the correct size. That one took all day.

I did a C15 Acert water pump yesterday that took about 4 1/2 hours. I was able to leave the precooler hoses connected and swing it out of the way enough to loosen the bracket. They also depend on the chassis and what's hooked to them. Water filter hoses, ect going to the pump that are hard to get it adds time. Day cabs are easier with only 1 heater hose.

There really isn't that much to take off. A few Turbo pipes and the pre-cooler to get the braket off that holds up the pump. The belt and pulley have to come off to get to a pump bolt, but the huge bracket in front can stay in place. No need to pull the alternator and A/C compressor, which saves a lot of time. There are 4 bolts that hold the water manifold to the pump, if you pull the manifold off the pump (which needs to come off anyway) first, the pump fits out without pulling the front bracket.

download.jpg download (1).jpg download (2).jpg just a few pics to show whats on that side of my motor. maybe this will answer the question as to why it took so long to change the pump. i admit its alot more than what was on my E model. i sure do miss that motor.
