    I think you are overstating it a bit.

    There may be some areas of the country where you can run 300 containers, but around here, about the most you can pull is around 200, and that's if you double stack.

    I've been shuttling rail crews for CSX and NS since 2011. I have yet to see one person operate the train. The minimum crew is 2, and a typical day (for that crew) is 100 miles. And then you aren't the one that puts the trailer on the train; someone else does that.

    Moving by rail is a LOT slower. A team driven truck can get from NYC to Chicago overnight. I've seen intermodal trains sit in a yard for longer than that...

    Thanks but I'll post whatever I want about anything I want. I drove for a considerable amount of time, a lot longer than 90% of posters on here. They were talking about picking up at rail yards. I wasn't shoving anything in anyone's face. Believe me if the money and benefits were comparable I would rather drive a truck. It is not as fun as used to be but still more fun.

    Somewhat true but the average length of haul has gone down. With the high price of fuel it is cheaper to ship by rail, especially if there isn't a time restraint. The local paper mill puts anything under 500 miles on a truck, anything over goes by rail.

    I'll go with that. It's the time thing, which is why I mentioned stores. Retail is the tough one, and produce. But raw materials and things like that I can see more rail.

    I know they were talking about containers but that is why I said "truckloads". A average railcar is equal to about three trucks. The farther west you get the farther you can go. Duluth MN to Fargo ND is 260 miles, 8-12 hours.

    Talked to a Roehl Intermodal driver in Gary and he shuttles from rail yards in Chicago mostly to deliver within a few hundred miles during the week then home on weekend. Said he averages close to 400 miles daily. I didn't even know Roehl had dedicated intermodal.
    Had his truck hit by the large crane when he was on the other side of a train picking up a trailer and couldn't move the truck fast enough and took off his fender...they banned him until he takes a rail yard safety course.

    OSU I know of 1 guy doing intermodal from the r. Yards also. Former Army heavy hauler and really knew his stuff.
