    here's the deal.

on the lower deck of my step. i have 3 feet strapable space. then i've got a box on each side of the trailer. that's 4 feet of unstrapable space. then i've got 20 feet of strap space. then i've got 3 wheel wells in the back. with strap space in between.

i bought 24 1 x 4's to give me 48 feet of vboards should i have a load that requires.

    the question is this.

can i put 3 pallet rows on the front. and use vboards. with a strap in the front and a strap on the back for securement of 3 pallet rows. the same idea would also apply to the back of the trailer. would that be legal.

or do i need to buy more 2 inch hand ratchet straps???? this idea is doable in the front but still leaves me problems in the back of the trailer. as the straps aren't straight because i have no winches over the wells. so it basically looks like a lousy securement job. and the straps don't always stay on.

most of my loads so far have been pallet loads. so i need an idea of securement for those unstrappable space areas. one local company i worked for hauls pallets of bricks. they don't put a strap over every row. instead, the put aluminum boards over 2 rows. and use one strap for every 2 rows.

they make a piece that sticks down in pocket, it hooks to pocket and has a 4 inch winch on top, or just use portable straps

I pull RGN's, and from time to time have to use 4" straps.
I put a portable winch on the outside of the trailer, on the beam itself. It's legal, as it is securement, so no OD issues.
Do you have a lip on the side, over the wheels, where you could put a portable winch? Maybe 4" ratchet strap would work there too?
If not, then get something welded on that will hold.
I have also ran a chain in the past, and hooked a strap with a chain hook on it to the chain, to get securement. Run the chin from in front of the spread, to behind the spread, and secure to it.

Sometimes I'll strap diagonal if I don't feel like whipping out my Portawinch.

Ya know use winch in front of tire and then hook other side behind tire or vice versa.

I like leftlane's chain idea tho... I would build short chains just to use over the wheel wells if I had your trailer.

the wheel wells have lips that stick out. 2 inches. i could use the hooks inside but then i'd have to use edge protectors on the outside.

dot might not like that idea.

it's a fontaine trailer. and naturally i can't find anything that looks like what i pull.

i'm thinking what we pull have whacked out specs. there's 1 foot 9 inches between the decks. makes for a really difficult tarp job.

there's a 4 inch platform under the top deck. and the lower deck is bowed down in the front. 6 inches that don't need to be.

i been using the diagonal method. but that doesn't always work. and dot really don't like straps that aren't fit prefectly through inside the rail.

A 5/16 chain will form a sort of "bridge" that you can then hook a strap to as well. I have done this a few times over the rear wheel wells. I have 4 of these chains in 4' lengths with hooks on both ends. I hook each to a stake pocket, then i hook my 2" ratchet strap to the chain and tighten it up. Works just fine

The cheapes place that I have found for the 4" ratchets is US Cargo Control. They sell their ratchet and 30' strap for less than Iowa 80 and sell the ratchet by itself for even less.
