The reason why older trucks are still running in California is because they can do so legally until December 31, 2013 as long as they have registered with the California Environmental Protection Agency. After the end of this year the old trucks will either have to have a new engine or a filter system, or they won't be allowed to run in California.

Starting January 1, 2014 you will see a crack down on trucks in California. Those out of compliance will be put out of service and I'm not sure what the penalties will be.

One effect this law has had is that the market for older trucks has eroded. That's why the prices for older trucks has dropped. So, for those who don't run in California there is a good opportunity to buy used trucks.

Trucks with engies built prior to 1994 are legal in CA till 2016. They have not found a way to make a DPF system work on a mechanical motor yet.

I am legal into CA till Jan 1st, 2014 and then I ca no longer go there myself.

All these complaint of CA, I have lived here 58 years, when we were kids in LA the air was so bad you could not see the mountains at all not even from say Pasadena.

So these idiots that say the smog control does not work, they are just as usual showing there ignorance. It does work the air here is how very good compared to the 60's and 70's. It used to literally hurt to breath, this is no longer true. Deisel smoke does pollute and getting rid of it has been a good thing. I drive a Cascadia D15 detroit, loaded to 80,000 always and still get 7.1 to 7.5 mpg. My Columbia same loads older model engine 5.5 at best. The new CARB Complaint engines work very well you just have to learn to drive them at low rpms, 1200 to 1300 is best.

here's what i seen that works.

cars off the road. NOT the new rules. cuz i can't breathe in that city. except for when a refinery blows up and gas goes through the roof. causing cars to stay home like what happened last year.

i actually saw blue sky for the first time in all the times i've been in that city. traffic was half what it normally is.

if california started pushing electric vehicles. the air would be clean again.

And in your opinion, the reason the air is better is due to cracking down on trucks?
