The non-turbo engines were the 7.3 IDI. A complete different animal then the 'Stroke.

The 7.3 evolved from the IDI NA to the 7.3 IDI Turbo to the 7.3 DI turbo. It is not, however, dramatically different, other than chamber design... At least it wasn't the dud that followed it! The 6.0 was pretty sad.

With a hotshot at what point do you need to go through the scales and run a log book?
We run big rigs but I get a lot of local (one pallet) or small items that we get called for.
I have an F350 srw regular bed I use to haul my 40' fifth wheel rv trailer, Iv been playing with the idea of purchasing a 25' gooseneck flatbed just to pick up and run around the small stuff.
Would be much easier and cost efficient than sending the big rig with a 48' trailer.
Have a cdl obviously but if I could put a flat bed on the truck and got a gooseneck trailer it would be a great training tool for drivers to learn and work their way up to a big rig in the company.
Im just a little (or maybe even a lot) confused as to at what point it would require a cdl and at what point you would need to go through the scales and run a log book other than local to base.
Based in the Bay Area in CA.
    Cheers.

Anything over 10k GVWR you need to log.

A 26 foot flatbed truck would do better. Buying one rated under 26,000 and hyd brakes and you don't need a cdl, ifta or irp to drive or operate it. It really depends on how much you plan to use it if it will be worthwhile.

Thanks for the response Truckon, does that mean if my pickup is rated on the door for 14k and I bought a trailer rated at 9999k I'm at 2399 GVWR? I talked to a trailer dealer yesterday, he told me once the trailer is rated at less than 10k you don't need a cdl but he didn't seem really sure.

    truckon Thanks this.

Would you still need to run a log book and go through the scales?

Your correct, only a handful of states still do the trailer under 10k thing, most states and federal are under 26k combined (truck/trailer) no cdl.
