Not sure if this is the right thread but I really couldn't find many tanker threads, but was wondering if anyone knew if you can go through Prime CDL training and then straight into tanker division. I currently live in northeast ohio and I know the primarily run the northeast.

I've read here that tanker requires a year's experience, but keep the source of that information in mind.

Your best bet is to call Prime Recruiting.

They say you need a year but they have put guys out of school through tanker training. They were giving me a hard time about tanking and I have 4 years of driving experience. I told them it was tanker or nothing and they said tanker it is then, lol.

Now for the tanker training update.

I have a new trainer and I'm starting a dedicated run with him to get my miles out the way. He's a O/O that already owns his truck. Really nice guy and clean too.

I got off the other truck because "I feared for his safety because of his a poor attitude and lack of people skills." I filed a complaint and will be following up to make sure no one else has to deal with his abuse and lack of knowledge. I will also be going up the chain to try and get some standards in place for TnT Trainers. I should not be teaching any "trainer" any thing when joining up with a new company. Logging, safe driving practices and trucking business knowledge are things you should know before picking up a trainee. Not learning them from your "trainee", atleast that's my opinion.

Agreed. I'm not sure you can find enough qualified drivers who want to train properly though. Many of these guys are just looking for another driver to keep the wheels turning, and need one because they don't have a clue about how to make money. You're doing the right thing.

Thanks IP. I will do what I can and hopefully I can get the company behind it. I think I follow too many rules to be a trainer myself. So I will probably be going solo too.

Trainer standards and a training manual hopefully won't take to much work to put in place.

    Called this morning.
without 1 year otr, at least, they will place you with a trainer but will still allow you to go tanker.
without 1 year otr tanker exp, they want you to go to their tanker boot camp, still.

    briarhopper and superpet39 Thank this.

Sorry guys. I've been on this dedicated routes the last few weeks. I learned the secrets of the surge but I still have a few weeks to go before I can go solo. The dedicated is over now so I'll have more time to post.

P.S. I'm in a new fleet with a FM that supports me driving safe and legal.

(I know it's probably close to impossible.....) But can you try and put "surge" into proper perspective for people that have only pulled a dry van?
