I have one of the Hagstrom, but I usually use the free ones you can get from NYC, they have all the through and local truck routes marked along with low clearances and handy stuff like that.

I think that it would be a good idea to have sub-forums for certain cities that are hard to drive in. Kinda like we do for different types of trucks driven. I know there has to be other cities out there that are just as bad. It would be nice to have a quick reference to learn the tips and tricks for these cities when doing trip planning. Moderators? Whadda you think?

@rizrob: You may want to look up some of the local CDL schools in the NYC area and maybe see if you can have an instructor take you out for a 2 hour lesson in the city all the while letting the instructor do a mind dump. It would be worth the cost of the lesson in ticket and fine avoidance.

it's not just NYC, it's the whole North East... you're in Mantua, take a ride through Greys Ferry sometime... there are some tough turns there in Philly too, plus you have Newark, Jersey City, Elizabeth... lots of fun up there.

PS I used to live in Woodbury.

That might not be a bad idea vanapagan. Any info is good info! I have the free truck route maps from the state. They are definitely worth the money(Free)! Just go on NY DOT web site and order as many as you would like. It was nice to have that along with me. If you didn't have that or something like it and tried to run there for the first time you would surely be setting yourself up to have a convertable truck!! I'll have to invest in the hagstrom atlas too.

Yea Kmac, you are right the whole east coast sucks! But the one good part about living in this area are lots of local home every night jobs. But with the good there is always bad. But I look at it as an advantage over the guys that live out in the middle of nowhere. We grew up with this crap! It's normal to us. Just imagine what goes through a guys head that has lived out in the farm lands his whole life. And then he gets a load going to NY or somewhere in jersey. Talk about a shocking experience!!! It would be enough to give you a heart attack!

That's the deal with my company... hire nationwide and most detest the Northeast. To be honest it is not my favorite area to run either. Give me the Southwest any day... I have had worse backing scenarios in LA and that traffic can be a regular PITA... but the weather is a hell of a lot better.

I was born and raised in the country, my hometown was so small it didn't have a single traffic light. In my first week after I got off my trainer's truck I was sent to Ontario. That was a big eye opener for me! My second week I was sent to Long Island, 2 pickups in Long Island City and another pickup in Newark. It took me from 8:00 in the morning till 4:00 in the afternoon to get back out of Long Island. I still have nightmares about that day, at one point I was driving down a road lost and confused and all I wanted to do was stop and bawl my eyes out. I eventually made it out thanks to a helpfull dumptruck driver:biggrin_2556:

We take 53' vans into the boroughs and pick up / deliver in Manhattan from time to time as well. Never been hassled.

curly88 that had to be major culture shock! I live about 15 minutes outside of phhiladelphia in a mix of suburbs and farm fields. I've spent a lot of time in philly and its even a bit overwhelming for me. I guess it's a good thing there is no place to pull over up there or you might still be there sitting on the side of the road crying!:biggrin_2559:
