Youll be bouncing around, climbing in and out of the truck, sitting in a bad position all day for 12 hours.
So what do YOU think?
Am I being naive?

You said you will be working locally with/for your friend which means his company is more than likely sending you to a local doctor or clinic to have a straight up DOT exam. You may want to double check to be on the safe side.
My company and my brothers company send the driver to sport medicine doctors who does the normal DOT exam and a full Skill Performance Evaluation (SPE) which includes moving 75 pounds repeatedly from one table to the next in a twisting motion w/o moving your feet. Then repeatedly moving the 75 pounds from the table to the floor and back again. Then pulling a 100 pounds with one arm on a nautilus machine. There is more but I will spare you the details.
We are not the only two companies that have these types of test.
Also, I'm not a doctor and I'm not sure how a doctor might intrepid 40 CFR 391.45 (b)(7) and your condition. Maybe you might have your doctor look at it and see what they have to say about it before you invest any money in a CDL.
As a business owner it sounds to me like even if your condition did disqualify you if you pass a DOT medical SPE you could still drive. My brother use to have a driver with one arm and he passed the SPE and was allowed to drive.
Other than that try the ride along and I hope you the best -
Right after my last post it dawned on me, I received this letter back in 2011 from the U.S. DOT Motor Carrier Safety Office Northeast Region and was like blah blah blah about a new regulation about having all me drivers "Self Certifying". I complied and sent out a copy to all my drivers and I went down to DVM and did it myself as well.
So, I drive interstate and all my drivers drive interstate, but having minored in law in college I did read the full letter and it said basically each state would handle the whole "Self Certify" issued differently so long as all the interstate drivers present DOT medical cards.
I went down to the DMV in my state and I said I want a copy of the state policy on the issue for my records. Well even though it didn't apply to me or my company, cause the feds already said interstate drivers had to have the card, I did find it interesting that intrastate drivers were no longer required to hold a medical card in my state. I just double checked on line and that is what it says.
If that is the case in your state as well and your bubby's company doesn't leave the state your in like flint! -
infact there is the possability that u may do better because of constant motion my back problems like it...

Well, I gotta say. Everybody I've asked has said not to do it. The only positive thing I've heard from someone internet or not, is from 3k Trans. I thank yall for the negative and the positive.
Saint walker, I think it does have the possibility of messing with a back, hence why I am here asking, from people who have been doing it for years, wether a year or not, in there opinion would have any huge effect.
2hellandback, I wont argue movement is good. It is just this hauling gravel gig pays literally twice as much, and I have no desire to become a journeyman electrician. -
Does anyone nose spe doctor in Columbia sc.

I agree, and Im one of them. Both dump truck and heavy equiptment.
Best to avoid this work. Off road will get you.
There is another problem Your diagnosis has nothing to do with the back. It is actually a problem within your gut, specifically the bowel.
Ulcerative colitis - Symptoms and causesCrappieJunkie Thanks this. -
Yea I was gonna say what heavy said, isn't UC with your bowels.
18hr to start, with ot after 40 I presume? That's a pretty good starting wage and today even a lot of dumps are air ride and spring loaded tarps and such. Maybe ask your friend to upgrade the seat or do it yourself if he won't. Costs a good penny but way worth the investment. You can get them with vibrating and massage modes even.
And if he pays ot which I would assume he does, if you work a full 5 day week 12hr a day 60-65hr a week that's around 1275-1400 a week. What are your wages now and expected wages if you stay doing what you are now?Last edited: Mar 16, 2018
