I saw a rookie thumping his tires while getting fuel. Very impressive, thumping several tires multiple times just to make sure. I knew he was really new when he thumped the steers!
Big Don Thanks this. -
He was just makin' sure someone hadn't stolen his tires, and replaced them with cardboard cutouts!Big Don Thanks this.

You should "Stick" your tires at least once a week......Thumping them can't tell you if they're off by so many pounds.....Tires aren't like Tympani drums....... -
We have cat's eyes on all our duals. I thump with my winch bar anyways since I have it out to check my straps.
-
Once a week? Daily... tires are too expensive to ignore. OTOH, I'll thump the trailer tires since we have an inflation system on them that maintains an ideal pressure. You can certainly tell a flat inside dual from the sound very quickly pretripping a new trailer.

Only time a thumper should be used is when the tires are no longer cold. Otherwise you should always gauge them at the beginning of every trip.
The problem isn't the time it takes to check them. The problem is most drivers don't know what to do with a tire once they discover it's low. Outta sight outta mind.
I'm amazed at all the drivers that have approached me in awe of my 50' air line with the glad hand attached like I invented it. Every truck stop sells these. Heck there usually on sale behind you while you waiting in line to check out.
Easier to blame the tires I guess. -
I have one too. Air gauges is too time consuming and you'd let most the air out.
-
No one uses their hand? A slap and i can tell which tires are low.
-
I Thump 'em daily.....But I stress you "Stick" 'em AT Least Once A Week....
