I started back in 1996 with a company called M.S. Carriers out of Memphis, TN.
They pre-hired me while I was still in school and paid $500.00 per week for orientation and 6 weeks of OTR training. Tuition reimbursement of $100.00 per week that started while I was in orientation. After a year I received a $2,500.00 bonus which I forgot that they even offered a year earlier.
I worked North East regional for .32 CPM and I was home every weekend. I pulled Dry Van 90% of it was Sears from 96-99.
I then bought my own truck and stayed on with them until they sold out to Swift in 2002.
They were a excellent company to work for with excellent benefits at a cheap price too. -
Being totally green in the industry, I went with the first company that said they would hire me (Midwestern Distribution, home of the Dollar Truck)! I wanted to be a truck driver, and was willing to team in a 36" sleeper, spring suspension Freightshaker COE.
Hey, what did I know?
I don't regret a minute of it, either. The only way to go was "up".unloader Thanks this. -
Try to avoid the mega-carriers. You don't have to sacrifice yourself just because you are new to the industry. There are a lot of companies out there that are hoping you will! Try to find yourself a good, smaller company to drive for. The chances of success will be substantially higher.
BigX72 and airforcetoo Thank this. -
What would you recommend for a good company OTR to gain some experience for the next 1-3 years?
-
Personally I would recommend Central Refrigerated. My wife and I drove for them and they took very good care of us. They are large enough to keep you busy yet small enough to still treat you like a human being.
If not Central then take the time to do some research and find a good smaller company. The good ones don't advertise so its going to take some effort. -
I drove for Knight 10 yrs ago,not bad actually was good.

You being in Mass you should have plenty of local opportunities. I spoke with a guy up there in New Hampshire once that said he was OTR being home everynight getting paid hourly .... I was like "that must be some alternate universe OTR ure talking about buddy!"
