The line haul exemption exempts you from logging. It doesn't mean you violated any HOS regs if you go over. It's in two parts:

100 air miles (not 110) and 12 hrs of on-duty time. You can avoid logging if you remain within the 100 nm radius and only work 12 hrs a day. There's also a 2 hr extension you can use on line 4 to bring up your work day to 14 hrs, but this can only be done once a week.

You can put yourself on line 4 24/7/365 and not violate anything. You'll get the violation when you drive a CMV without taking the allocated break.

Nope. You can just record your start and stop time provided...

You return to your start point within 12 hours.

    Wrong

On duty time includes any side work you do. You simply cannot work 8 hrs as a mechanic and then work 12 driving a CMV, legally. You would need to log.

You can do it provided you remain within your HOS limitations. HOS rules include all side work you get paid for.

Then you at not comprehending what I said.

No, he does not have to run a log book. He does have to record his start and end time. Which means he is noting his on-duty time. But he also has to be at the start point before 12 hours is up.

And yes, ANY time you are compensated for work has to be recorded as on-duty time regardless of employer.

    Ghost Ryder Thanks this.

Knowing the rule and asking various drivers about it, I have yet to find anyone who adheres to it.

The part everyone is leaving out about the 12-hr rule though is if you have to extend your 12 hour day you can do it by switching to a log book for that day.
