Aside from all the perverts and obnoxious comments: A heavy tire thumper like the metal tie down bar used for securing flatbed tie down straps works great. I can tell if my drives or trailers are off by give or take 10 lbs. using something solid and heavy, not a dumb piece of wood.

If you have a leak it is going to leak down. It's not going to decide and stop after 20 psi. So you will find it. It's just a matter of how quick.
If a company driver finds one low on a trailer he'll be hoping to drop the trailer as quick as possible. So it's not so much checking the tires as what you do with it, lol.
For some a tire check is hearing on the CB, "hey driver you have a flat".... "Okay, thanks! I'll check it out"!airforcetoo and Big Don Thank this. -
I will have to go with a dumb piece of wood for 800 please?
Seriously folks, a tire gauge is the right answer.... Use the measurement part for the thumping! -
Actually, when a tire is 85% inflated...It's flat so, a tire that runs normally at 105 PSI cold....Is flat at ~ 90 PSI.....(89.25 PSI).....

I use to see drivers drop n hook all night long and not check a thing. Of course these were always the same geniuses getting CSA points and having blow outs and couldn't figure out why.
Time catches all. -
The funny thing is, that the driver who fails to do a decent pre-trip, because he "just doesn't have time because of the tight schedule," will be the one waiting on road service on down the highway. And just how much extra time did THAT cost you???????
truckerdave1970 Thanks this. -
Another thing we used to keep on hand as far as safety or for theft deterrent was a pulp thermometer. You would be surprised how much a 7" spike in someones eye would stop them from getting to you! They fit perfectly right into the slot of your visor and are easily accessed there. When put in the palm of your hand through the middle of your four fingers.... well you get the point!
Big Don and Wiseguywireless Thank this. -
I would think you probably could sell some Dave! Don't know if you can price them competitively enough with the mass made and marketed stuff though. OTOH, could be interesting to have a "Tire Thumper By Dave" to either keep in the truck, or if you are home, keep behind the front door. (In case any tires try to come in the house by force, of course, of course. . .)
