Depends entirely on company. At my farming co. our bosses kid, age 16, can drive tractor trailer within a 150 mile radius of starting point as long as he doesnt cross state lines.

Keep in mind he only has a class D license and we are a farm haul co. We dont play by the same rules as other companies including legal weight limits. However while the DOT does turns their head alot for agriculture they are strict on permits.. kinda...

 

Wrong . 26,000 and under no CDL unless hazmat . Straight truck 26,001 and up Class B . Class B can pull a trailer 10,000 lbs. GVWR or less . Trailers heavier than that with a truck over 26,000lbs. requires a Class A .
Back before CDL's MA required a Class 1 for a tractor whether it was pulling a trailer or not .

You can drive an single vehicle of any weight capacity. This means straight trucks. Technically speaking buses and coaches and tanker trucks too but you need other endorsements for that.

YOU CAN drive a straight truck no matter what weight capacity with a trailer behind it that is under 10,000 lbs GWV.

You can even drive a tractor with a trailer behind it that is under 10,000 lbs GVW

You can not drive a truck with a trailer that is over 10,001 lb gvw

AND

the threshold for a class B is 26,001 lbs GVW. So many companies will hire drivers to drive trucks without a CDL.

BUT to warn you about the road test, YOU can not take the test in a vehicle that has to have a gvwr of over 26,001 lbs.

Don't know, had a freind long ago that as soon as he turned 18, bought himself a dump truck and went to several companies to be hired on demand, he was always busy.

Practice. But a car with a manual and get used to it.

 

Class A is a Class B with a combination vehicle "endorsement... " Class A and and B have nothing to do with weight...

 

Wow it's amazing how many CDL holders on here have no earthly idea as to what their CDL covers and doesn't cover. The first page of the #### CDL book lays all this crap out.

 

Then why would a driver be required to have a Class B rather than a Class C ?
