Guy comes in the shop with S60 blown turbo( grinding). Change the turbo. Simple enough. Heads out doesn't even get around the block no boost. Rolls back in. No air pressure to the actuator. Vpod is shot. Turns out on a history report on this truck it's had 3 turbo in less than 2 years. Could the Vpod have been bad the whole time? Would explain the number of turbos gone. No? Why didn't the Detroit shop find this?

IMO a lot of shops don't have mechanics they have parts changers and a computer that tells them what to do. I don't have a problem with a young person getting a start but keep some of the experience around to help them.
landstar8891, MNdriver and EZX1100 Thank this. -
its getting harder and harder to find good technicians every day, find a good one, and stick with him!

3 turbos in 2 years? Not that bad money wise. Had my overhead run 4 times in a matter of a month 3 times in a week because my Jakes were hanging up. Every time it'd throw the overhead off. Had the Jakes rebuild at one shop didn't solve the problem. Went to one cat dealer ran the overhead seemed to fix it used the Jake 20 miles down the road same thing. Went to another cat dealer ran the head again Jakes still hanging up truck was there for a week finally replaced all 3 solenoids. Wasn't a young kid that fixed it either he was an actual tech. And he's the ONLY tech that touches my motor! I have a local guy that handles everything else but I know what your talking about when it comes to trouble shooting the days of test lights, getting hands dirty diagnosing problems and what not are over. Now its plug it into a machine and let it tell you what the problem is.
However that being said I was not happy with the first cat dealer that ran my overhead as they removed valve covers and the air to air yet neglected to see my turbo was missing 3 nuts...although I should've caught it as well that was 2 1/2 hours start to finish and 2 gaskets later to fix that leak...worth it too I dont get headaches as bad anymore. -
i think a lot of it has to do with the complexity of these motors and the liability for a wrong guess
if they have the computer telling them ABC is wrong, they are covered legally.
you gotta remember, the time it takes to properly diagnose a problem can be cost prohibitive. He isnt driving the truck but using your verbal info and whatever the idiot box tells him to diagnose the problem at $100/hr
If he wastes 2hrs diagnosising and he is wrong, he gets the ding on his weekly report. Plus the driver is crying about spending 2hrs of the mechanic "doing nothing"
Though i do understand the initial post, and I have had my problems with mechanics (i have a kingpin problem as we speak and the local idiot didnt do it right) but there are always two ways of looking at the same problem. -
Because all the ''real'' top notch Mechanics Retired and are living in Florida smoking weed and fishing....We are now left with Parts Changers...At your expense of course...
MNdriver Thanks this. -
I refused to take my last electrical problem to the shops. They kept telling me they wanted to swap this, that and the other thing. Asked them for a wiring diagram and if they cared to use it or get me a copy of it. "what do you need a wiring diagram for?"
I ended up fixing it myself with a call to Rebel127 who worked within his network to help me out. We nailed it first time. No extra parts swapping needed.379exhd and extraenterprises Thank this. -
I have a bunk A/C issue and the last 2 mechanics can not solve or diagnose the issue...They want me to buy parts and toss it at an unknown issue and hope for the best....
