didn't really see a specific thread on this but wanted to ask. Any of you guys on here run oversized loads and use pilot cars? My mother in law was wanting to get into driving for a company, but she has no idea where to go or whom to talk to. I tried to do some research to help her out. I came across a link on the Oklahoma DPS website that says something about people wanting to become drivers for this service have to attend a certification class. there was something else about obtaining 1,000,000 liability insurance. I am thinking that this would be intended for companies not for a specific individual unless you are starting up a business. Any suggestions? I did find a link of pilot car companies in Oklahoma and got her started in that direction.

no worries, I haven't had enough coffee yet this morning either :biggrin_25525: to me personally, I would think that if anything, you would have to have some type of certification, you just can't go out and say "i am going to escort this wide load" but the 1,000,000 insurance would keep a lot of folks out of the running to do work like this which would lead me to believe a company has to carry the insurance to cover any accidents that may occur out on the roads. the only other thing on the DPS site was some rule changes where the licenses were being reciprocated from other states.

If she lives in Ok. she needs her cert. for that state. A good class is about 8 hours.
Plus the fee. Then you need to setup with different trking companies. Some use brokers.. Some are good and some no pay.
    Good luck.
This is not the best time to get into it. Go look at yahoo pilotcars unlimted. Plenty of usefull info..
Plus she needs to learn how do pilot the loads. The class will not teach you that...

i escorted for 3.5 years. IMHO i would try to find a company that she can work for i say this because i did both company and on my own. Depending upon the company they would pay for the training that she needs and it would give her a chance to learn how things work. as far as the million dollar policy that is required if she works for a company they should have this poliicy and she would not have to pay for it unless she started doing it on her own.

I,ve had a couple employees certified here in NC. classes are 8-12 hrs depending on the community college you go to. cost around i think $60. can get list of schools off your state DOT website. may have to wait for some time for a class to happen, we have waited for up to 2 months. We use outside escorts thru Comdata, so you might consider going thru them once your up and running

You sure you want to swim with the sharks? I recommend you get to know heavy haul first. We don't play. This is a tough field to enter. If Your wrong, Millions could be lost. One out of three permits is wrong.
